I think SL is in much better position to enhance creativity of kids. I would like to see a stripped down, easy to use, kids version (younger than 12) of SL in future. It would be a playground of creativity and I bet they can make amazing things. It can have a system like Toontown so chatting is limited.

I look forward to seeing what the next generation does with these tools that we could not have foreseen. ...

I agree. I'm sure my six year old would come up with ways of building I never thought of.

I know there would need to be a higher staff-to-customer ratio in such a place, but I would love to let my kids have at it in a young kids' grid.

Or maybe it will produce 90% obese retards who sit at the computer 16 hours a day downloading porn, and 10% of creative folk who will take up programming, music, graphic design, etc.

There are major differences between legos and SL based creativity:

1) Much much cheaper. For a cost of a box of legos you can create unlimited things for months. You can also share them with your friends and keep them forever.

2) Much more flexible. Not only you can build, but you can make them do interesting things, not just static objects (unless you use much more complex and expensive lego robotics)

3) Much more interactive. Kids would be playing with other kids all around the world, best way to learn by observing. Enhance greatly social interactivity.

4) Much easier to evolve. While basic legos changed very little in the last 20 years, SL based system likely to evolve into one with much more advanced capabilities very quickly. I can forsee a day where you will be able to have a machine that will create a physical version of your creations for example.

5) More technology oriented. Allows kids to get comfortable with technology, computers, internet, virtual worlds.

I am sure there couple of other reasons, these are good enough for me.

I liked Legos a lot but they are definitely cost-prohibitive. Such a premium item... I wonder if that has anything to do with it coming from Denmark as a luxury but now it seems like even small kits cost a lot of $$$ in my area.

...and sit at the computer 16 hours a day being obese.

SL has made me more creative in the time it has been part of my life. No question about it. It has made me sit in front of the computer more TOO but it could be worse.

How did I know somebody would bring up the "Legos"/"Lego bricks" thing? Didn't realize the company itself was so concerned about it, though...

Although I can sympathize with their cause, I have a feeling their statement isn't going to make much impact on the American populace. I mean, "Legos" are a deeply ingrained part of our culture over here -- for better or for worse! :p

Edit: Just read up on Wikipedia that they've been using that statement since the '70s?? Heh... case in point.

That's because if they don't, they risk losing their entitlement to the brand name... If "legos" = "construction bricks" in the public's mind, then every competitor can advertise their own bricks as "CompetingBrand legos" instead of "CompetingBrand construction bricks".

Actually, what they're doing is fairly textbook.

http://www.ggmark.com/protect.html#Maintenance

From: someone
The key to trademark maintenance lies in the source identification function of marks -- remember, marks identify the source or origin of products and services. If, and when, a mark no longer performs this function, it no longer is a mark; it becomes a generic term. Generic terms designate a type of product or service, without calling to mind any specific manufacturer or provider.

A generic term cannot be a mark. Generic terms are in the public domain, and may be used freely by anyone. The terms, "escalator," "shredded wheat," "kerosene," "aspirin," "yo-yo," "zipper," and "trampoline," all began as marks. Through lack of proper use, and/or enforcement, these marks became generic. Today, any company may use them to describe certain types of products.

So they just want the exclusive right to sell LEGOs... I mean, LEGO toys and bricks.
