I was searching for .mov files that I could play in SL and I came across this odd one. My question, is she real or computer generated? I am leaning to CG. But, if she is real, I think she sort of creeps me out. Click the video link below and watch, what do you think? Kaya's Screen TestI got no clue about the background of this, it just turned up in a random video search.

CG. The eyes and lighting are exaggerated, and many 3D folks are certainly that good.
The only way that could be real is if "she" dressed up in a rather fake-looking skin before the photo shoot and it was shot in an even faker-looking studio (by the reflections).

CG. I have yet to see a CG human whose mouth moves naturally.

She's a real beaute I'm leaning more towards that she's CG, I got a keen eye, getting into a bit of CG work myself, once I get some more time and find the right programs heh, if she was real though I would more or less likely have my mind break into 1000 peices, again she's a Beaute haha,

CG, the mouth movement & mouth/speech mismatch gives it away

Oh, she's definitely CG. In fact, she's literally a text book example of character modeling. She's on the second page of color pics in "Visual Quickstart Guide, Maya 6 for Windows & Macintosh" by Danny Riddell and Adrian Dimond. Here's a scan:

easy, but scary..
08-06-2005 00:40
easily spotted as CG.. but what matters here is how believable she is. imagine the day when we all can look this well in SL?!? or when these CG characters are given an advanced AI and control over their own animations and so forth.. there will come a day when we have no idea if what we're seeing is real or not. scary and exciting at the same time. remember Running Man? or for the younger generation(s), S1m0ne? SciFi almost always ends up as SciFact.. it's just a matter of time. - cool video though

I'm still waiting for my VR Glasses to arrive. Seriously though, Step One in that direction will be to move to using actual 3D models in Second Life. Cue broken record routine on my part.

I figured it was CG, but it is eerie how perception can get distorted. I had the same thoughts about it as Cybin when he said, "there will come a day when we have no idea if what we're seeing is real or not".
The "wag the dog" stuff for politics already exists, but what will it be like in 20 years from now? With advances in CG and special effects, how are we to really believe anything we see as news? Is that quote I am seeing and hearing come out of his mouth authentic? Is that really him?
What about less paranoid uses for this technology? We already see it in use in the movies as entertainment, how far will that go? Will there be a time when there will be no need for an actual human actor? Market surveys could create the perfect movie stars and they could live forever, never needing to learn their lines or demanding pay increases. The job of stuntman will vanish as a profession.
How else will we see CGI routinely applied?

Well if it were up to G. B. Shaw, the answer would be yes ("If the actors will merely speak the lines as written, I will guarantee the results" or soemthing to that effect). However, acting is much more subtle than that, and I don't see soemthing coming along all that soon that can handle the million characteristics that go into human interaction well enough to cover the "jes nes ce pas" of it all that makes it real and communicates emotion and intent.
If it were that simple, Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion monster roster would have also included more humanistic characters with emotional depth but they didn't. Yoda and other puppet/muppet/mariantte characters that seem to bridge that gap yet have humans directly or indirectly managing their motions, pacing and voice. Animation also has that human element in the process. I seriously doubt a computer would be fed the works of Shakespeare and out would pop Branaugh, Olivier, Gibson, Guinness, Richardson, et al.
I'm sure things will get better, much much better, but the human hand/mind/heart will need to be involved at a more essential level I'm sure. And even if this level is achieved, that a purely computer-driven character(s) are available, that's not going to supercede the NEED that actors have to perform. The reason folks act isn't that it needs to be done, they act because they need to do it. Now, stunts, that might make sense but maybe not. Those folks are probably also fulfilling a need they have too.
We'll see!

From: Loki Pico I figured it was CG, but it is eerie how perception can get distorted. I had the same thoughts about it as Cybin when he said, "there will come a day when we have no idea if what we're seeing is real or not". We're already there. Character animation is about the only area where you can usually (not always) spot CG. It comes down to skill of the animators and production budget, but we're already at the point where there are no technical limitations preventing CG from being idistinguishable from live action.

Clearly CG, but man that's not bad. I didn't think the sound was quite synced up though, something was wrong there.

CGI and not bad but lots of givaways. Mouth movement and the earrings had it pegged as CGI in the first 5 seconds. Earrings are swaying like they are in motor oil. Real earrings like that jiggle around like epileptic Chihuahua’s on a leash.
The skin doesn't have much subsurface scattering so it looks painted on and the shirt looks like plastic armor just to name a couple other flaws.

what i meant..
08-06-2005 22:51
i'm not talking about our life times. when i suppose replacements and indistinguishable CG characters, i'm not thinking in terms of a short period of time. i believe that in our lifetime we will see CG movie stars, and definitely stuntpeople, not sublimate humans for CG actors, but to join them. we will see CG characters that look and act real.. and contain an AI to rival the human mind, granted.. maybe not quite as developed as our minds in our, ifetime, but eventually. we are not witnessing something that could merely replace us, we're witnessing the birth of TWO new lifeforms. two new species that are the inherent evolution of mankind. we are nature final result on Earth, but not the only result of life. we are creating a new lifeform in CG characters, that will eventually migrate to "robots". not that i expect this to happen in even our childrens' lifetimes, but simply as an eventuality. and after that, we'll see androids. yup. seriously. once robot bodies are perfected to mimic humans well enough.. and after the consciousness of an AI imbued CG character is downloaded into said robot brain, we will eventually figure out how to download (or sustain the lifespan of) the human brain into a robot body.. thus, androids become a reality. at this point, there will be two new evolutions of Homo Sapien. the human-equal robot and the human-powered android. we will no longer need stuntmen, as well as human astronauts to pioneer space travel. i'll stop now before i melt my brain.. i'm not even close to sober right now (drinking will do that to you ), but i'll end with this... when is suggest peering into the future of Second Life, i'm not talking anout 10 years down the road.. i'm suggesting, given an infinite time-line, what do you see?

by the way..
08-06-2005 23:01
did i mention (ok, so i know i didn't, but anyhoo..) that it was this thread that lead to my previous post?
i know, you're saying, "well duh, of course it did".. but wait, there's more... (darn it, i feel like The Quirk, lol..)
i was discussing with a friend that i love SL.. and that part of that reason is due to the conversations and debates that arise here. the intelligence and intelllectual degree at which these forums average is significantly higher than the averge MMO. i then went on to tell her about the "why" of that statement.. explaining this exact thread to her and how we can just as easily be found telling butt jokes as easily as we can be found discussing the future of human evolution due to the hand of our own creation.
i went on to theorize about everything mentioned in my last post (and more) due to the existance of both this thread and the community that we are.
Cheers SLers. Cheers to all of us and to the nature of pure humanity.
Sincerely, Cybin Monde
