Hello, today I downloaded SL and signed up for the basic package. I went through the orientation and it did help me out a little, but I'm still in the dark on most things. Are there any tutorials or help files I can look through somewhere? The help files I've found in game don't really cover what I'm looking for. Also, one quick question: since I haven't purchased the premium package can I not build a house? Thanks!

Heyo Ryan, a warm welcome to SL. :) You CAN build on Basic account (I'm on Basic), it's just land that you can't own (technically, although you can rent -- SL is a world full o' choices). Head to a sandbox, a practice building area, and try to lay some prims down and get the hang of things. Sandbox sims include Island Sandbox, Morris, Cordova, Goguen, Newcomb, Anshe Chung's Mature sandbox (not Linden-owner, up in the northwest), and Plum (which is underused and very quiet). Remember to take your stuff with you tho, 'cuz sandboxes get cleaned twice daily.

Also, as for the help files, you've come to the right place because the forums is FULL of info... like lots and lots. Use inworld Live Help too, and I can send you another pack of notecards if you'd like to peruse through those.

Feel free to ask totally wacked-out questions, some of those are the very best. :D

Hi Ryan welcome to Second Life. You can charge ahead to a Sandbox as Torley suggested or you can talk to a Mentor if you happen to run across one. There is nothing wrong with learning how to build up front but I always suggest learning a few edit skill first.

Welcome to SL, Ryan. Torley did a good job answering your premium question, so I'll add my own .02 Linden.

SL is not like other "games" you may have played - it's not a game at all, really. The learning curve is quite steep on it, but definitely not impossible. I'll tell you what I was told when I first got here only a few short weeks ago - have patience. Ask questions. Make friends. But above all, give yourself time to learn because there is much to learn.

If you haven't done so already, do a "Find" on the Ivory Tower of Primitives. You can spend hours there learning how to construct things. I've made return trips to brush up on things I may have forgotten or to re-acquaint myself with concepts.

There are other displays in the world which are intended to help new folks out. For free giveaways of some clothing, items, and scripts, I highly recommend the Newbie Shelter, Yadni's Junkyard and Twelfth of Never, among other places. I took the free scripts out and played with them for hours to figure out how some things work. It was time well spent.

I think you'll also find that there are a lot of very helpful people in SL who are willing to give of their time, experience, and even items to help folks who are just starting out.

Good luck to you, and welcome once again!

You see, our experts describe you as an appallingly dull fellow, unimaginative, timid, lacking in initiative, spineless, easily dominated, no sense of humour, tedious company and irrepressibly drab and awful. And whereas in most professions these would be considerable drawbacks, in chartered accountancy they are a positive boon.

Hello,

I'd suggest picking an event that either is specially aimed at newbies with questions or just going to one of the 'hangouts' that welcome newbies like The Shelter or any big event that will have people, some of whom are likely to help you. There's a lot of Tringo games, but these can also be a good way to meet people and get started.

If you want to build a house, you can go to a public sandbox and practice, you can also rent land temporarly and some people sponsor free areas for newbies to stay. Use FIND and PLACES on the game panel to use word searches for these options.

The Welcome Areas are also places to hang on to ask questions.

You could try a lesson at the Ivory Tower of Primitives then go to a sandbox to practice.
