Add a picture to my profile? Do I upload it to my inventory fist? What size of picture can I use. I took a snapshot of me and download it to my HD and I would like to use it.

You need to have the image in your inventory.
Just click-and-drag the image from your inventory to the "X" (where the picture should go) on your profile.

Open your profile from the menu. (I think it's the World menu)
Open Inventory, and then open your photo album folder.
Select the snapshot that you want to use. (if you saved a snapshot to HD, chances are that it will have the buttons and such visible. Either way, you'll need to re-upload it to SL. It's easier to just take another one right there in SL by hitting the Snapshot button)
Drag the snapshot over to your profile and drop it into the user picture box.
You should now have an updated profile with a picture in it.
Admire your profile.
Choose OK to close the profile window.
