Where do you go to meet people?

Let's say a new player approaches you. They want to meet other people in Second Life; hang out with other players, chat, and get used to interacting in-world.

Where do you point them to?

That's actually a challenge I'm pursuing: to create a self-guided tour of the best places to find people in Second Life. But I have a few interesting twists: Since it's a tour, I can't select the welcome area (where the tour begins) or the themed communities (which are already tour highlights elsewhere).

So when you want to meet up with other Second Life residents... where do you go?

Just looking for some resident feedback on the "hot spots" to be. ;^)

Personally I go 'Dot Hunting' - pretty much ignore the landscape and use the map to fly around the grid searching for clumps of white dots - when I get the urge to talk to people.

Where do I find people? Hm, different places each time really. For a good while I was always finding people at Lyra's Ruby Moon Cafe in the outlands.

It's an interesting idea Lee because aside from the welcome area no place springs to mind as the place to go to meet people. Hm.

Nexus Prime in Bonifacio! Don't even have to really move around, people seem drawn there by some evil beam or something... (I bet bUTTONpUSHER has something to do with this!)

Definitely a great place, but I guess that almost counts as a themed community? So I dunno. We get a lot of new folks out that way, and there is rarely less than five people about during peak hours.

I've found that the best places to meet people are at their homes, while they're building them. I've done that more than once (usually purely by accident), and it's interesting. You'd think that people who are busily building away would be annoyed by an interruption, but in every case I've come across, they're happy to stop and talk (especially if you complement their home, and rate them), and even help you out if you need it. Actually, that's how I met Loenardoe, when he showed me how to buy land. That's also how I met Evie Fairchild; her house is coming alongn nicely, and I'll probably stop by later to see its progress.

Aside from that, visiting random landmarks helps, too. Some have been more productive in terms of my meeting people than others; Avatar Central and Designers Unlimited spring to mind.

Ok, well, this post probably doesn't help that much. I've never really gone to any big meeting places (except for a block party that I attended, but that was more an event than a landmark). Maybe you should just put the more densely populated areas on your tour, and hope that people are around when you get there.

I agree with Ama. When I'm hanging around the Welcome area and someone asks me that question, I usually tell them something like....

"There are a lot of people with varied tastes and attitudes in Second Life. Without knowing what your interests are, I suggest you fly East and look for groups of white dots on the map and stop and chat."

The abouve usually includes a disclaimer about Jessie, warning them about the Outlands.

But to give specific locations, I would have to say any of the Themed Communities, pointing out the ones that are growing strong "without" Linden support. Such as Route 66, the new Mile High City and others.

I too dot hunt or attend events when I'm feeling social. When Im working on something Im usually at my place in Shipley. I have to say we get a fair amount of traffic out there as people are often told that Catherine Omegas place is a must see build.

Misomer ... your shop is right next to our new home :) We love it! Great work! (feel free to stop by our humble abode any time :) .. don't know the coords off the top of my head ... but I will get them when the server opens up at 3pm my time)

Anyway ... where is this Catherine Omegas place you're talking about ...

To meet people I pretty much do the same things you're all saying. Fly around and look for bunches of people. I attend events too ... but sometimes there are just TOO MANY people there for me to follow any one conversation.
