Hi All,
This post was made yesterday in another thread. I am reposting it hear so it doesn't get lost. We'd really like to welcome the new residents, and we'd also like to discuss the world of Second Life in general with everyone. To that end, (and since it was mentioned in the events page) We'd like to hold a town hall meeting at the amphitheatre.
So, in short: Town hall meeting 2:30 amphitheatre. Philip, Peter, and Haney will be in attendance.
For the new people, the amphitheatre is to the north, on the border of clara and varney.
Standard behavior for amphitheatre events is: Everyone sits Person on the stage has the floor Chat should be limited to Q&A, please use IM for all "private" conversations. Please do not build or do anything to keep conversation from being productive.

The Outlands, war games, and you Hi All,
Based on the posts that we are seeing here, I think it's fair to expect that lots of online gamers from "other" online services may be in-world tonight. Welcome! We think that you may find Second Life a great place with a very different community. Please be respectful of the residents who may not be familiar with the play styles of community from whence you came.
As we are expecting a number of new players, I would like to address a host of probable issues that will affect both new residents, and landowners in the outlands. Some things to consider are:
-Residents in the outlands may find themselves in the position of defending their land. -New resident expecting to be able to shoot lots of other people without provocation may find themselves becoming very unpopular. -Sim framerates in the Outlands will probably slow down. Really slow sims (what we call a simulator-spin-lock) will get rebooted.
The short History of the outlands: Second Life was designed to be a creative space with infinite possibilities. Among the possibilities that we knew residents would want to see would be the ability to play games that involve a certain amount of destruction. To that end, we built the outlands, and designed a "health" feature so that people "could" die. The Outlands were built to accommodate this play style. Our first group of residents almost never went to the Outlands. They knew they could die, and they were plainly not interested in "that" particular play style, so they didn't go there. A new group of residents then realized that not only was land cheap, but plentiful. Realizing that there wasn't a great deal of violence (yet), a lot of people moved out there. Soon after, a group of other online game players who saw the outlands for what it was originally designed, moved/planned/plotted there accordingly. Recently (as of last night), the newer residents began war games in the outlands, and understandably, the current residents were (or might be) a little upset that the land they so carefully cultivated is now being usurped.
Some simple advice: -Set your land to "no outside scripts". This can be done by "turning off scripts" on your land that you don't own. This new feature has been implemented with this type of situation in mind. The unfortunate side-effect of this problem is that your friend wearing the propeller hat will not be able to show it to you unless you turn the script permissions on, but this may be an acceptable situation when you consider that the alternative is dying and respawning at your home location every few seconds.
-Be careful of negative ratings. Assuming that other residents will probably rate you negatively if you randomly shoot people, you may want to consider setting up your own rules. For example, "persons wearing <this> item are playing, all others are not". If you have too many negative ratings, you will not be able to build any items, rendering your weapons useless.
-Consider a move. The outlands started as a relatively benign area, but was always designed to be a "more violent". Linden Lab will continue freeing up land for more people to purchase. As a side note, the land on Lusk court has a pseudo-building code, and an impressive amount of fantastic structures. If you are looking for a change of scenery, its not a bad place.
- Abuse reports. File them if you are not in the outlands, but someone is acting like you are.
Some things that Linden Lab is keeping an eye on: Resident behavior as typically determined the way we expand the world. Assuming that lots of people are having fun playing "war games", we CAN put up a sim that would be dedicated to this particular play style. We won't be able to do it for a few weeks (three, we think) but we will keep a close eye on how many people are playing.
Last note: Cory has made some additions to the tower so you can play capture the flag. To "own" the tower, get to the top and touch the hand. A message will say "name of person" has the tower, and rebroadcast it every 10 seconds until someone else takes it. If you fly outside of the immediate area (20 meters) you will lose possession of the tower. Have fun.
We are looking forward to seeing what happens. This should be fun. I'd really like to thank the many folks who have posted here and kept the conversation both lively and informative.
Best Wishes, Linden Lab and the Second Life team

I am in the WW2OL group, and I was minding my own business building things, and I got killed at least 6 times while I did *nothing*. I guess what I am trying to say is don't let perceptions get in the way of who some people really are and how they act, give them a chance, especially me. Also, this game is everything the Sims Online should have been, it is incredible that the linden's have pulled off such an incredible project, and I for one salute them for their imagination. In today's gaming environment, trying to invent a new genre is very much frowned upon, and I really salute the Linden's courage in doing what they've done. All I have to say is WOW.

Although I already know the outcome of this meeting, LindenLabs is welcoming these "gamers" with open arms to help test the system, 2:30 is not a good time for some of us. So as in other major town meetings, please post the chat history for those of us than can not make it.
Thanks

Hey Pete...wrong thread but what the hell....
Thanks for the help last night. Much appreciated. Still got muy issues with the system and my machine specs are top notch. Working through the forums and resident info to see if I can get them resolved.
Biggest issue last night was disappearing completely on respawn from death. On respawn I was "stuck".
I'm sure I'll die again within 15 minutes of "server up" so it'll be interesting to see the fix come about.

Yawn. Stop feeding the troll, guys. And hey, puter problems got ya down? Still running that archaic Win98se? Once, a long long time ago in a place far away there was WW2OL Troubleshooting Tips . A lot of the things there apply to games like this, too. Someday I will get Winblows XPee and will update that site. Maybe. No promises. It'd go faster if someone sent me a copy of XPee. Avondell

Well, I for one am not a murderer. If it comes down to banning accounts, I hope that it is done on a case by case basis. In the mean time, I'm armed to the teeth for protection only.

I hope there will be no banning. We are playing the games as designed. If you are in the outlands you can die its a simple fact, out side of there there is no death.
If banning does start just because people are part of another community i think the user counts here will decrease as quickly as they increased.

We arent going to get banned. The devs have repeatedly welcomed us here. Individuals might get banned, but give the Lindens a little credit...they arent going to ban us all.
And stop feeding the troll. He is upset because we are about to surpass his group in size. Its petty. Zeddicus is a member of the Noise Tanks, I believe, and most of us know Zeddicus as a decent guy. This is an attempt at antagonizing us by ONE person. Let it go. If he gives you problems ingame, maybe we can talk to the leadership in Noise Tanks and see if something can be done about him.

Well gin666/Jessy666 are here...somewhere. I imagine they'll stay away from most of us...especially the vast right wing conspiracy.
