I'm surprised that this under-development game hasn't been mentioned on these boards yet. I've been waiting for a game to be made this way for years, since this is how things were done back in the days of DOS and 5.25 disks (can anyone say Starflight?). Anyhow, this game's only been mentioned once on these boards (by a Linden), even though the info is something like a month old. I encourage you all to read about Spore.

I was especially impressed by all the nods and homages Will mentioned to past gaming excellence: in particular, the "demo scene" section. I grew up playing on an Amiga and saw plenty of those things. Amazing -- this Spore game looks so fluid. I hope these images are still very preliminary because they look sorta monotone green-blue-yellow-ish. (I mean, where are more warm colors?)

The Veloxi rule, even if they were obsequious. And I really hate the Spemin, with or without the whining orb.

That's really, really great. It's a little scary for some who's trying to work as a 3D artist, a member of that little army this is intended to render obsolete, but it's excititng and very impressive none the less. I can't wait to see what games look like in 20 or 20 years.

yes, well... *AHEM* don't you hate it when something you dreamt of creating years ago pops up all of a sudden? like this Spore, for instance. it gets so aggravating, but it's also heartening to see dreams become reality. years ago i came up with an idea for a game.. it was one where each player would have his/her own planet and would create flora and fauna with extreme freedom. creating an ecosystem to go along with them. then, players would be able to venture to other player's planets.. with options to trade plant/animal life, or to allow "drop-offs" or "pick-ups" with permissions. the animal editor was to be.. well, EXACTLY like the one in Spore. no.. i mean EXACTLY!!! the ability to add any parts in whatever way and to have a logical engine to drive the mathematics of how things would work and interact. the only thing missing from Spore that was part of my original vision is the inclusion of custom plant life and it's role in the eco-system. players would select a group (or groups) for the plant life to fall under.. including a custom category. in turn, herbivores and omnivores would get certain plant types designated as healthy, no effect, poisonous and possibly other options as well. argh. - in closing.. how awesome would it be if SL were to become integrated with Spore? sharing resources, features, and more. SL could become it's own solar system (instead of just one planet; thereby appeasing the call for space sims and such) within the "Spore-i-verse".

Looks pretty cool... but I refuse to get excited about it since it probably won't be released for 5 years or something...
Should be a lot of fun when it gets finished though.

Spore is one of the few in development games that I'm really excited about. The concept is great and it looks very cool so far. Have to wait and see how the gameplay is though. Black & White had the same sort of buzz around it and I ended up hating that game. Worst most needlessly complicated control scheme ever devised. I try not to get too excited anymore, but I'm definitely watching this one.

Wow... that looks incredibly exciting. I hope there's more ways to interact with other players' cultures than just fighting, though. I'd totally be all over Spore if it lives up to its promise. Not like Black & White... damn am I sorry I jumped on that one right off the bat. But at least it taught me not to buy a game that just came out (unless I was in the beta and had first-hand knowledge already).

Oh man, penny arcade is so hip and edgy! They are hilarity in it's upmost form! (god I wish they would just die already). Anyway, spore has me fucking psyched. This looks to be the game modders have dreamed of for years.

Oh, this sounds exactly like gene pool or darwin pond on massive amounts of steroids, ever hear of those? I wonder if they are remotely related... http://www.ventrella.com/GenePool/gene_pool.htmlhttp://www.ventrella.com/Darwin/darwin.html

OMFG Eggy, thanks for the link to Gene Pool. I've long known an SL resident by this name, but I was clueless to the game--I could monkey w/ swimbots for days, I think.
Spore looks dangerous--If I'm still playing computer games in 2007-or-08 when it comes out (I might be a monk, a homeless person, a famous author, or more likely, something I couldn't even imagine right now by then) I will likely become a fast addict. Of course, RL (1stL, BioL) can get intoxicating, too. Who knows?

If you don't want to hunt through that article, here is a link to an hour-long video presentation on Spore. The stuff they are doing is completely amazing.
