I think Jack Orlowski is in NYC too. So he can't answer your post and tell you how he is handling it, cause his power is probably out!

I live in New York, THE STATE NOT THE CITY jeez...

We had power out for about 2-3 hours then it came back. Watching all those people in the street at NYC is great.

I love how the networks are putting up big red screens with "THE BLACKOUT OF 2003!" all over the place. It makes the story much more interesting and dramatic that way. [/sarcasm]

Well, THAT was annoying. I am *so* ticked off right now. At around 4pm, I was sitting in my den, relaxing with my dog, when I heard my VCR start to make noise and stuff. I went into my kitchen, looked at my iMac, and it seemed fine. I turned around, and the microwave clock said "RESET". I figured we were having a brownout, since it was 98 degrees outside. I went upstairs and saw that the lamp was flickering, and then BOOM, it was GONE. All the power was out. I took out my cell phone, and I tried to call someone, but, it wouldnt connect. I went to my bedroom, got my 4inch battery operated color TV, and I turned it on. About a minute later, they interupted the current show and all they said was "The entire nation has had a power outage. We have no idea why. Stay tuned.".

Anyway, my graphics card came, but, I am too tired to install it now, I must get to sleep. The power finally came up at 11pm. This has been a *really* awful day. I know some of you in other places may think it is a little stupid that its being called the Blackout of 2003, making it seem all official and whatever, but, its really been awful. All the traffic lights are broken still, even with the power up (now, they all have the lights set to green). There have been hundreds of car accidents today, its been really freaky.

Goodnight :)

Cleveland - Power went out 4:10pm EST came back on 6:00 am. Water from the taps is still brown since we ran out from people opening the fire hydrants.

Hamilton Ontario Canada here, my power was out just shy of 22 hours. Everything in my refridgerator went bad, it was mayhem. Accidents all over the place (no traffic lights), police, ambulance and firetruck sirens going all day. Who would think this day and age that would be possible.

Well its been back for a bit now, god I hope this never happens again, nice to be back.

Paul, I am in the same boat as you. How could this happen?? I cant believe you guys had power out so much longer than us. Mine came back just 7 hours after it went out. Some people a few miles away in Queens, New York had theirs out around 14 hours. Manhattan just got full service back a few hours ago, Subways running tommorow. At the moment, all buses in NYC are free.

You "youngsters" don't remember that this happened once before? I think the one in the 70's affected Canada too. Not Ohio or Michigan as I recall. Of course they claimed after that it was all fixed and could never happen again. Right.

One thing I learned during this is that the breakers that are between components of the grid don't work at all the way I would expect. They said that a section in Ohio went down first and that it was THAT sections responsibility to detach from the grid so that it didn't affect anyone else (apparently if failed to do this). I would expect it to be the other way around. If the grid detects one element drawing everything else down it should isolate it and let it fold without hurting everything else. Sorta like on the airplane when they tell you that if the oxygen masks drop down you should put your own on first before helping your kids.

Thats just about the only advantage I can think of to being an adult. But then I don't fly that much anyway.

1965 was the longest before this, 13 hours. Of course it didn't affect me then because I was 7 years old and in England ... =0) There was also a big one in 1975 I think.

It was actually in 1977, despite what Mayor Bloomberg said today. He was wrong. The one in 1977 was only the 5 boroughs of New York, while the one in 65 was huge, like this one.

my question is this about the power outage. Why would people be driving around through town if the power went out pretty much everywhere? I could be wrong since I dunno how it went down, but hmm, all the lights are green, let's go out for a drive, we won't get into a wreck now that the power is back on. Surely when the power went back on people would have been smart enough to wait and see what the deal was. I just look at it as, if people were dumb enough to be driving around, the time of a major power outage, the fact that they wrecked just proves how much people listen. And also who doesen't drive up to a light and look at the other sides lights when waiting on a light to change? If I see traffic moving both ways, it's a general knowledge to stop and wonder what the deal is. That's just really really dumb. Now I can say that ,because New York is the state I was born in, and they tried blaming a fire in Niagara Falls for that big of a power outage? How stupid does that sound?

I'm posting this from work since internet connections for residents isn't 'important enough' to be working yet. Even this morning power went off for hours and came back on not too long ago. Cable TV still isn't back yet since it started on Thursday.

Oh I'm in Toronto. Nothing to do but sleep and listen to my boss yell at me for not trying to work. And its over 80F two nights in a row, I might have to 'waste' some water and take a shower.

First of all, the traffic lights were only green for a few seconds. Some started working normally after that, the rest shut off. People were driving around trying to check on neighbors who didn't have power and weren't answering cell phones.

Before the power came back, people were driving around because their cars were air conditioned, as well as going to the store to get whatever food was left, etc.

First off the power went out, so the lights were out totally. Second of all it went out at 4:10 pm my time and people were at work, how the heck you supposed to get home if you don't drive. Most people were being sensible and treating each traffic light as a 4 way stop sign like your supposed to. It only takes a few morons to throw this all out of wack. Also after it got dark all the low lifes came out to take advantage of the complete darkness, lack of alarms and the police being busy. Most people once they got home stayed home and only ventured out the next day to find stores open to get food and water and to check on the less fortunate people who needed help.
