Ever since the recent update, whenever I try to connect, I get "Verifying protocol version" and then an error "unable to connect to second life. The system may be down".
Have the servers been down for a while? Or has something changed? This used to work, now I get this from two different computers.

Make sure you are clicking on the shortcut that was created when you updated to the new version. If a shortcut is moved to somewhere other than where it was created, installing the new version will not update it. I have had the problem you discribed when I used an old shortcut.

Yeah, that was it all right. The new version uses a shortcut that has different parameters, and the old shortcut didn't work. I found that I had two shortcuts on my desktop, and I didn't notice that the update installed a second shortcut. I was using the first, and it no longer works. The second shortcut works fine.
