Rating Decay

I know there are a lot of threads about ratings, my apologies for starting a new thread. I am just wondering how many have been watching their own decay. The reason I ask is I got two triple negs in December and I have been waiting to see the negs drop off. I waited until the end of June, then July, and now it is August and I still have the neg rates. Is something broken or did I get stealth neg rated recently?

I saw some talk that neg rates wont drop off, but I found the following quote from Robin...
From: someone
Robin Linden said...
Starting February 16, and continuing thereafter, positive and negative ratings older than six months will decay and disappear from ratings totals. This change will have the benefit of making more recent ratings more meaningful and representative, while also making those ugly negatives a little less permanent.

I know its not really important in the whole scope of things, Im just curious because it seems I should have lost two of my triple negs by now. I know I should still have one set of triple neg because that happened a couple of months ago in the Welcome Area. But, I know for a fact that my other two came in December when someone sent two people to neg rate me. That was seven months ago.

Anyway, it seems that something is not right. I thought of asking the Linden Hotline, but I wanted to ask here to make sure I am not missing something somewhere.

I think that it is counting from February 16th, really. See you by the 16th of this month ;)

Yeah, you might be right about the February start date, just seems odd. I guess thats only a couple of weeks away now, we shall see.

Ratings have not decayed for me since the intial adjustment.

I recieved a triple negative from a player that no longer exists on August 11 2004. These are the only negs I have ever recieved. These ratings have been on my account for almost a year now, even though they were more than 6 months old when the wipe occured.

Now I am really curious about February 16th.

Before the initial wipe, I had given over 1000 ratings and most of those disappeared. It now shows I have given 361 and I know I have only given maybe 12-36 rates in the last six months, I wonder if that will be reflected soon.

I don't think there's been any decay since that initial wipe, at least that's my experience anyway.

Pull up my profile.
(And when you do, remember I was a part of the newbie class of "Rate Whores" :D)

Either:

a) Ratings are not decaying as previously explained

or

b) Someone has been spending a mother-lode of cash on rating me, and I was afk the whole time.

In the past 6 months, I've probably given out about 5 pos rates, and received 20. Obviously, my profile doesn't match that.

I know that certain people have beet tracking me down to renew the neg rates they gave me that had decayed... and personally, I think that's rather childish, but it happens.

So does that mean that after August 16th us newbies will be "ratings equal" with the oldbies?
Won't that mean a lot of older players go from ratings in the hundreds to practicaly zero overnight?
That would be interesting to say the least.

After the last purge mine dropped to something like 150 in each category. After the next purge they should drop down to single digits :p

About time...
08-02-2005 13:35
Not that I hold it against you but this is one of the single largest inequities in SL which should be fixed immediately. My understanding previously was that these eroded/decayed continuously at a fixed rate over a six-month period. How difficult is it to attach a timer to the ratings script?

I hope LL was referring to "calendar" time and not "playing" time...

I wonder if this wasn't stopped or the frequency cut way back as part of the efforts to relieve the stress on the databases.

Wow.
:o

To think that I might be as popular (on paper), as some of the older players is exciting. Since no one rates much any more though, maybe the mentors and greeters will be the new ratings queens/kings.

I found that the vast majority of my ratings happened as a newbie, so I fully expect to drop down to zero at my six month mark. I wonder what level they will settle at?

I mean if one assumes that they can be renewed after the old ones have been purged, then one could run around and get all the friends to do it again, but will everyone bother to do it?

I've noticed the same. I asked Jeska about it and she pointed me to this thread started yesterday:

So yes indeed, the ratings 6 month kill off is not working.

I got triple negged sometime back in the summer of 2003. Around the time the rate decay system started, the negs disappeared. I guess the decay is there, but its somewhat uneven.

Shortly after the rate-rate-hike when I was still rating folks and things I thought merited it, I'd find myself bumping into folks and thinking "I can't believe I never rated her on X" when in fact I had but it had been purged. After enough of this I just stopped rating as I imagine that the person would net more if I just gave em the L$25.

I'm not totally solipsistic, but I think my attitude on rates is pretty common: no one much bothers any longer. I'd love to hear it if I'm mistaken.

Because my start date was January, I imagine that I will be starting over as far as ratings go. So, when you 'read' my profile, please do so gently. :D

I am not a bad person, I swear.

Not been working - bug reported...
08-04-2005 08:30
Robin Linden says it hasn't worked in weeks and is a bug she reported to the development team previously.

Not sure how its supposed to work, just another of those Linden mysteries that keep us occupied like hamsters on the wheel here in the Forum...
