Crashed and lost drivers
08-20-2003 13:59
I downloaded the update, logged in for a sec, froze then crashed. My PC restarted itself automatically then died.

After a couple of tries I got it up and running only to be confined to 4 bit color.

I uninstalled and updated my drivers and all is working properly.

Now, is it safe to dl SL again or am I going to crash and burn?

I'd like to actually buy it as the trial has me interested in staying on longer than a week. :)

Great! Camilla, you should definatly buy it! I haven't heard of anyone crashing after this last update. Camilla, try again, and if it happens again, e-mail support@secondlife.com.

They've posted it in the announcements now.

This is really a bummer. I'm missing an event right now that I really wanted to go to. :-(

I've crashed 3 times inside of 15 minutes.

I've crashed twice now while waiting for my inventory to download. Also my packet loss bar has stayed red with packet loss ranging around 10-95% and my avatar unable to move in any direction without a 2 minute delay.

I've been suffering from severe packet loss for the past 72 hours now and every other online game I play there's no packet loss or lag.

packet loss is a result of ISP, meaning how can u not have packet loss on other online games? Impossible. Packet loss is due to isp maintanence or high trafficked ISP's.

Been lots of viruses out there creating havoc with traffic...especially the Sobig and the other *good* worm I heard about that is suppose to patch the hole that the blaster worm was going thru...lots of business affected. So,,,I would suspect that it might not be the update...just have to be patient until this whole mess dies down and then see if it is the update.

Well I downloaded all my secutiry updates from microsoft, and patched everything up, all firewalled in also. I notice nothing at all unusual about the update. I reccommend people learning about how to get their net connection and pc secure, there is obviously lots of people getting infected with viruses and worms. Computer shutting down by itself is the Mblaster Worm.

Well, I also have all updates and patches, as well as a firewall, and I am experiencing the crashes.

Get off your high-horse for a second. Just because you don't experience a problem doesn't mean that it doesn't exist.

Oh, and in regards to your response to Millie about packet loss. Her ISP isn't the only provider involved in her connection to SL (Unless she uses Level3 for a provider, of course.) The problem isn't necessarily on her end. And packet loss is/can be caused by many things other than heavy traffic and system maintenance.

You seem pretty sure of yourself for someone that's making a lot of erroneous assumptions.

Packet Loss

To learn more about packet loss, try using this program:
http://www.icnet.ro/~stanimir/winmtr/

For other utilities that are useful in diagnosing connection "issues" with Second Life, see our drivers and utilities page:

https://secondlife.com/drivers/

The bandwidth speed test is always a fun revealing bit of info as it lets you know whether your ISP is living up to its service contract or not.

Hope this helps,

Yes, actually, I was. :p

I had several things I wanted to do last night, and I couldn't do anything.

Peter, I've run that tracert, with latency to secondlife normally running around 90 - 120 ms. Ian tells me that's not significant enough to harras Level3 over.

I seldom get any packet loss. On the very rare occasion that I do, I lose about 1-3 packets per thousand or so.

I've also done the bandwidth speed test several times when I've been having trouble in SL. I've never registered less than 1.7Mbps on that particular bandwidth test.
