PG sims are wrong

I am writing this to try and get a good definition of a PG sim.

According to the Community Standards,
From: someone
Initially each simulator region in Second Life will be given a movie-style rating of either 'PG' or 'M'

and a little farther down, it also states,
From: someone
A "PG" next to the region name in the lower right hand corner of your screen indicates that you are in a PG region. No use of intense strong language or expletives in chat/IM. No nudity/sexual content in textures or sounds. No content depicting sex, strong violence, or anything else broadly offensive. No open soliciting of chat sex or avatar nudity.

If any of you have ever been to a PG rated movie, the only part of the above that actually applies to PG is “No content depicting sex, strong violence, or anything else broadly offensive”. PG movies routinely have frontal nudity, mild violence, and even strong language. It can be confusing for a person to see PG on a sim and get scolded for saying the word “shit”. That word, and others like it, can be heard every day on TV, in such programs as Everybody Loves Raymond, Friends, etc.

If the Lindens are trying to prevent the total use of any swear word, that will never happen, and I could run around topless all day on a PG sim and be within the MPAA definition of PG.

I totally agree that this is “their” game, and they set the rules. However, maybe a change to a "G" rating would make it easier, and clearer, for everyone to understand what the Lindens are actually trying to accomplish on a PG sim.

If changing the sim rating is not possible, then the Community Standards should be revised to reflect EXACTLY what is forbidden in a PG sim and not left to the whim of anyone with the last name Linden.

From MPAA:

From: someone
The theme of a PG-rated film may itself call for parental guidance. There may be some profanity in these films. There may be some violence or brief nudity. But these elements are not deemed so intense as to require that parents be strongly cautioned beyond the suggestion of parental guidance. There is no drug use content in a PG-rated film.

I don't think being topless all day does fit in a PG rating, since all day is not really 'brief'. ;)

Its interesting that they mention there MIGHT BE some nudity or profanity, but there will be NO drug use. Wonder if the Lindens also follow this. hehe

Hm, it is my understanding that brief frontal nudity will bump a rating from PG to PG-13.

And also that TV-PG lies somewhere between MOVIE-PG-13 and MOVIE-R. I dunno why, but it seems to be the case.

Hm can we get a list of all the non-allowed "intense strong language and explicatives"? And perhaps some examples of "content depicting sex"? Hehe.

I do understand where you are comming from Tracey, I think ;), but I also think that the Ratings seem to fairly match the desired content. It may be argued that the occasional 'shit!' is not really 'intense strong language' (although I guess it is an explicative?), while some one shouting 'F you! F this!' etc etc is?

Hm.

Perfect thread to finally ask a Linden once and for all.

Are players who are under the age of 18 allowed to come play SL or not?

Yes or No is all I need, I'm not going any farther than that.

It's an unfortunate coincidence that LL picked "PG" to describe non-M sims.

Dave - I asked this question before and the definitive answer I got was 'No'.

I have friends in some mature sims and I personally don't like Matrue sims. Just my own opinion but too many people misuse Mature sims. I can deal with a little bit of vulgarty in PG sims and the occasional nudity is not a bother. Now don't get me wrong, I'm in no way a morality freak, I think morality is the downfall of why things are how they are. But to me, IMHO so many people in-game abuse so many things the game depicts in its rules for them NOT to do. That;s fine and dandy, doesen't bother me a bit, but if I need to stay out of Mature sims to avoid that, that's alot easier than coming here to gripe about it. That's all I will comment on for PG VS Mature rated sims.

I've discussed this before in game with people on several different occassions. AFAIK profanity is OK in PG sims here, but not OK to use it excessively or offensively. I do agree, what they describe as PG is really G rated, and the PG sims should follow the PG MPAA guidelines more closely IMO, as they're a bit more free, while keeping the intent of "keep it to a minimum, though not forbidden" structure.
