It is doubtful IMO that the vast majority of SL residents will gregariously purge their inventories for the "good of SL" Given the current inventory tools and (for me) the engrained tendency to collect useless items I will never rez again (packrat-itis)

An incentive to dispose of unnecessary inventory items might do the trick.

Here is my idea for a "Recycle Bin" Granted it would require much more thought than I am willing to dedicate to this, but collectively we could make it feasible.

Say you buy this sexy 150 prim "Jedi Fighter"...you fly it twice around the sim and it gets put into mothball for the next 6 months...

Or you upload 50 textures at $10 each that you used for a specific build that you no longer need...

Or even that great pic of Flipper Peregrine with a trout hanging out of his ass, that seems to have lost some of its appeal over time....

You trot on down to the nearest "Recycle Bin" (these could be placed at every public telehub) and you dump all these indispensable items into it.

For the 150 prim fighter you get back $L.50 per prim for $L75.
For the 50 textures you get back $L25.
And for that pic of Flip you get $L5. (Although I'm sure Jenn would pay more for it)

Sure this would have some economic implications, as well as what to do about "Free to copy" items that would immediately become very popular.

But if recycling IRL puts less demand on landfills, I would think it could have a similar effect on database storage. (Dont ya love the correlation between servers and landfills *g*)

Instead of gifting a newb with $L..give him a box of unwanted inventory and point him towards the Recycle Bin.

I see the potential of a secondary "junk market" where entrepreneurial types might wholesale purchase for the sake of recycling.

Or for the altruistic among us.."Junk for Charity"

How about Linden Lab's "bellying up to the table" with the $L to capitalize such a venture..I am sure it would be less costly than new servers and more bandwidth..with I personally am not willing to subsidize in the form of purchasing storage.

Limit it to no copy items - and a bonus for deleting textures would be a great idea. I'm all for it! You also don't get any credit for items you've created, only textures you've uploaded that are completely purged from the database. (IE, you haven't sold them to anyone and such)

And don't forget, it wasn't me with the trout thingy... IT WAS MY ALT!

This could easily be avoided by only giving a refund for dissimilar items.

How difficult would it be for the recycler to check for identical items and only pay once for it?

or a cap on daily recycling refunds..

or a "Free to Copy" object having no recycle value..

or a listing of who recycles what so that abuses can be logged..

Seemed to work very efficiently in another game. (thats still around)

Sure there were some abuses, but they were identified and alleviated quickly.

I could care less how LL deals with its resource/load issues...just as long as they DEAL with them without me having to pay MORE for them to do it.

While I agree with your last statement of sentiment Stroker the Recycle thing would be abused.
Why because one can not forsee ever possible abuse of something this simply instituted.

In theory its a great IDEA...but in practical usage to many asshats would abuse it like the Rate WHores Abused the rating system.
