So...I created my first commercial item.

A set of turntables(record players and a mixer)..they are unscripted as of yet, but soon they will play music.

How do I go about advertising my product for people to buy?

Mostly word of mouth, and a huge picture on your property showing that it's on sale.

Just remember that there's a stigma (not sure if this is correct usage of the word) going around where people who've advanced to a certain level in building skills will look at an object on sale and say "I can make that" and won't bother buying it. So... make a lot of newbie friends :D

We are planning some opportunities for residents to advertise in the new welcome area in Ahern - in a few weeks.

Hehe... I kinda fall into that category sometimes. It's just that some items are priced WAY too much for what they are / what they do. *cough* single primitive glowstick that changes colour for $300 *cough*

Also... I tend to base my judgements on how valuable I think the item is to me. Honestly, purely asthetic stuff like attachments for my avatar, or tatoo textures, or a nice hat, etc. I don't place much value on because it's true, I can quickly whip up my own for a fraction of the price, and they'd be in exactly the style that suits me personally because I made it.

Another factor in it is I'm a perfectionist freak. I literally line up 99% of my objects down to the 0.001 level, and if I see that an object for sale was put together a little hastily, that can really irk the crap out of me. :p

I'm more likely to lay down the cash for something artistic, beit a good painting or design a person has created themselves, a sculpture, etc. Or just something in general that warrants the words "that's badass!". I've seen a few vehicles that have been scripted pretty well and move around nicely, but more often that not they're not designed/modelled very well which kinda detracts from the overall impact of it. Now if someone were to show me a really sweet model with great texture work and a great script, that would wow me and I'd wanna support the creator of that 100%.

Anyways...

When I'm a big, rich, evil genius, I'll gladly help people out by buying the things they work on. But right now I'm a borderline Second Life bankruptcy victim who's desire to build is far bigger than his wallet. :D

I have to save every penny I have to build my evil base.... I've already said too much!

heh. What irks me is that I gave away only one copy of that script for free, just because it was nothing special. And now everyone and their momma has a copy, and they're making money off it! 300? I can't believe that! Guess thats what you get when theres no protection on scripts.

Anyways, as for that stigma, I definitely do the same. The only things I find myself buying lately are objects with textures or sounds that I want or if it has a script that I know I can't do yet. Eventually I could learn from the scripts. But, increasingly, theres more and more things I know I can create. I guess as time passes we're all gonna have to get more creative. ;)

Ope. I'm really sorry to hear that you got jipped like that. You tried to help out a n00b and they just turned around and kicked you in the face. Really not fair on you.

Dee, I want you to judge my turntables...i trust your criticizm, hehe..

They cost a shiny $240 but that's for a 24 prim object and it eventually will give you the ability to mix track samples together...crossfading may be an option too but im trying to be realistic right now...lol

Crossfading would require you to take each individual track and put it into a music editor like Sound Forge or Cubase and actually fade the track at the start and end...

Well, I don't think he kicked me in the face. He probly was just giving it away like me. I don't care about that. It does bother me more that people are taking advantage of the noobs by selling it for so much. But, what REALLY bothers me is that there's no way to stop this type of thing from happening again. grrrrrrr Here's that mad face again.
