Maybe mentioned previouly, but If ya' get the chance...check out Google Earth. Its free. Its interface is cool and easy to understand. Basically, its a 3d program that will show you elevation maps of the earth (including buildings), that you can tilt and rotate, etc. It's like the Google Maps, only in 3d (and much cooler)...

I was finally able to download this, after two days of it being unavailable... I can zoom in on my street and see the cars parked outside. It's great fun.

I am a subscriber of Keyhole (Now Google Earth), and unfortunately the quality of the software is considerably worse than it was before Google purchased the company. A lot of the high-resolution images from other providers were removed. It's still great for major urban centers, but it's now worthless for a lot of medium-sized cities here in the midwest.
On the plus side, Google extended my subscription to Google Earth Plus to two years as a token of gratitude. Hopefully they'll regain some of the former high-res satelite imagery which was lost.

I remember checking out the trial version of this in 2003 (yes, it's been around a while now), back when it was called EarthViewer3D. Nice to see that they have a completely free version available now.

It's great fun! I wish the pictures were a little more current, well at least for my town. Barring that, I'd like to know the date the images were captured on, just out of purient curiosty. It is pretty cool to turn on all the extras and let them load in, can get a pretty good idea of what a neighborhood has to offer!

From: Ardith Mifflin A lot of the high-resolution images from other providers were removed. Yeah, lost my city to this too. But do File > Logout and login again but choose the Legacy server, and there they are. ... can also load up Mars Surveyor map Love me some Google Earth -Ghoti

From: Ghoti Nyak Yeah, lost my city to this too. But do File > Logout and login again but choose the Legacy server, and there they are. ... can also load up Mars Surveyor map Love me some Google Earth -Ghoti I thought you'd suggested a miracle cure, and I was about to come back to the thread and joyously thank you. Unfortunately, I was one of those unlucky individuals who purchased my Keyhole subscription in the time between when access to the Legacy database stopped being sold (without this fact being revealed to those signing up) and when Google Earth was officially released. I had originally used Keyhole back in February, and though I enjoyed it, I let the demo pass without purchasing access. Then, at the beginning of June, I decided that I really did enjoy using the program and I subscribed. Unfortunately, I didn't have access to the old images at that point, either. Apparently, only accounts which were purchased before June were given access to Legacy. This is information gleaned from a search of some Keyhole community websites which discuss the matter. Evidently, I chose the worst possible time to subscribe. I wouldn't have purchased an account if I had known that Keyhole had already decreased the quality of the pictures and certainly not if Google was going to be releasing a free version also. While researching the problem, I did discover that they're giving refunds to those who did purchase Keyhole before Google officially took over. I've decided to take advantage of that. I'll resubscribe to the paid service when the primary database is more comprehensive.

From: Madame Maracas It's great fun! I wish the pictures were a little more current, well at least for my town. Barring that, I'd like to know the date the images were captured on, just out of purient curiosty. The images are a mixture of pictures from different dates. I noticed this by checking out my own neighborhood. On one hand, there is an empty field where a brand new high school is due to open in September. The empty field suggests this shot was from spring of 2002. On the other hand, my home has the new roof that was put up in March of last year. Upon further inspection, I can see my car parked on the street. I got a second car a year ago this month, which places this shot sometime around late spring 2004.

Everything I looked for was there! I wonder how old the pics are... if they're recent I think I even found my car. I was disappointed in the quality of the "secret" areas around the world though. I was hoping to be able to see ships docked or military bases in countries like North Korea (hehe) but it's pretty blurry. I did find a bunch of ships on the coast of Sicily though. Definitely Italian/European looking things.
