I've never ben able to enjoy marijuana in my life. I've tried a few times and every time it is a highly unpleasant experience.
Extreme fatigue, difficulty breathing, accelerated heart rate. I find nothing about the experience the least bit enjoyable.
I had a friend once tell me that it is possible that I am allergic. Any potheads out there have any insight?

Dr. Becky Says...

I had a friend once tell me that it is possible that I am allergic. Any potheads out there have any insight? Yes, it's possible, but why would God be so cruel? In all seriousness, it's probably one of two things: 1) Bad pot. You may be smoking seriously bad schwag. There are three major strains of cannabis, and only two are worth a damn. Indica and Sativa produce different results, as well as the Indica-Sativa hybrid. Given the prohibited state of pot in this country, it may be laced with unpleasant chemicals that are making you feel bad. I would bet that there were people out there who drank alcohol during Prohibition, had bad reactions, wondered if they were allergic, but were totally fine when they drank clean booze after 1933. Roomate once unknowingly gave me coke-laced pot, and I was a *very unhappy* Becky for an hour or so. 2) Yes. You may be allergic to any number of chemicals in cannabis. Sucks, but I think you can probably be allergic to anything. Poor friend of mine gets massive migraines if he eats chocolate. Keep in mind this is all from personal experience. I'm sure a little Googling will come up with all the answers.

what i don't understand is how people like being drunk I get clumsy and sick all day. I love weed When you know what to do when you use it. It does cause your heart to beat faster, and if its pounding and you feel bad that means you have had too much. 1st timers or light weights shouldn't smoke more than just a few hits. Schwag isn't a very good weed either, i usually smoke kein bud. It gets you high and you don't feel bad. Weed for me enhances things, get a funny movie a group of friends, plenty of munchies, and lots of something to drink. Its not a good idea to drink alcohol. Dry mouth can be unpleasant and you don't want to chug alcohol Also never excersize, you will get into some trouble. Also try not to think about yourself and what is happening, concentrate on talking with someone or a movie. I recomend watching Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

oh yeah and read this site http://www.perkel.com/politics/issues/pot.htmA lot of people are all against pot, but the truth is, its safer than alcohol. Nobody has ever died from weed. The only reason its illegal is so people can make money off it. If it were legal it can't be controlled and anyone can grow it, lots of people would lose business.

I had a friend once tell me that it is possible that I am allergic. Any potheads out there have any insight? This is a common experience with people susceptible to Panic Anxiety attacks. I've known quite a few folks that suffer these effects with marijuana, myself included. I suffer from genetic panic anxiety disorder, and went from a heavy pot smoker to practically not smoking it at all due to the onset of such attacks. Now I'm back partaking of it in small doses on occasion, with little ill effect. But like i said, small doses and usually only when in a very relaxed state. I've actually known two people that were hospitolized for a short time due to such symptoms after smoking pot. Both were diagonosed as having severe panic attacks. It's odd that a drug that normally relaxes folks, can cause such an opposite reaction in some folks. But it isn't an allergy really. Just the effects of the THC triggering a panic attack, which in turns dumps tons of adreniline in the system, causing a your body to act like it's on red alert, while your mind is going, "What the f*ck is going on?".

As Phil Ochs once sang "Smoking Marijuana is more fun than drinking beer." I am the same way. Beer to me tastes like vomit, wine tastes like vinager. Have a couple of "kandy kocktails" (Mikes Hard Lemonade, Smirnoff Twisted, etc) and the buzz I get is like unpleasantly being forced to relax as my shoulder muscles start to sag. To each their own, says I. As long as you aren't hurting anyone doing it. The Dutch, at least, have the right idea.

Your body can develop an allergic sensitivity to pretty much any chemical or biological substance there is. Allergies are a triggering of the body's defensive reactions out of proportion to the actual threat. So yes, it's possible you're allergic to marijuana.

I know a couple folks who are allergic to pot, thank the stars, I am not. I also know a few folks who are allergic to alcohol - funny thing is they are all either of Scandinavian or Asian ancestry, their faces turn bright red, and they get piss drunk off of one or two beers or drinks.. I myself am allergic to tobacco. I get sick as hell for up to 2 days from it in ANY form. It's awful. Back to pot - there have been a few times where I have gotten a little panicky - but that is usually off of hi-grade stuff, and when I haven't smoked in a while. It can be a bit unnerving - but NOTHING like the panicky feeling I get from LSD or psilocybins. I hate the feeling of *fighting to be in control* that I get from acid or shrooms. On that note, I once smoked shrooms from a bong with friends at a party - BAD idea. My hearing went all wacked out - I couldn't understand my friends, it was as if they were speaking a foreign language, the ceiling - well, the entire world got scrunched vertically, including people - and it seemed as though I could literally see for miles. Not to mention any light's color was EXTREMELY amplified. Make mine weed please.

I don't believe a person should ever take those substances if they are uncomfortable giving up control of themself. If you agree to let those substances take control, then things can work out amazingly-- assuming other people don't interfere. Otherwise, it can be severely traumatic if you try to be the one in control. (Speaking from experience on both ends of the spectrum at different points in life.) The whole point of acid or psilocybin is to interrupt the proper functioning of the mind, so everything goes wrong the moment you want to take control back.

I've never heard of such allergies. I've never heard of a single case in my life. They don't teach you in school, "Don't smoke pot because you could be allergic." As far as I know, that doesn't exist. Someone else mentioned you could be smoking dry/old or bad pot; green and sticky is the way to go. You may also have athsma, or allergy induced athsma which is triggered by any kind of smoke. Try smoking through a water filter, like a water bong. Also, the more you think about it, the worse it'll get; paranoia might play a huge role in this. I'd love to smoke you up sometime Neehai with some sticky green pot in a water bong and if you start feeling unwell I'll take care of you. ("awww"

I used to get exactly the same symptoms you mentioned Neehai and I thought for awhile that I might be allergic to pot as well but it turns out that I was simply making the mistake of imitating the heavy smokers who shared joints with me by taking a huge hit and holding it in as long as possible. After experimenting with taking tiny tiny little puffs and barely inhaling at all I found I could get a very pleasant high so long as I was careful not to take too much.

I can asssure you with 100% certainty that a person CAN be allergic to pot. My mother is *extremely* allergic, she cant even be in the same room as someone smoking or her throat will close up her glands and tongue will swell up to the point she needs to be taken to the hospital. I managed to inherit this little allergy, not to the same degree, but when smoking, my throat will lock up, I have difficulty swallowing, have difficulty breathing, my glands get sore etc. I would like to note that we are the only two people I have ever met who exhibit the allergy to this severity so in my experience its fairly rare and it would be understandable to assume it dididnt exist at all, but I asure you it does. And boy do I wish they could cure it.

Okay, but, Spider, that sort of message could confuse some people, because that's what it feels like when you're thirsty and not drinking water when you're stoned. It's hard to swallow, glands hurt, etc. For anyone experiencing this and not freaking out about being allergic to pot, drink lots of water if you start exhibiting these symptoms. Not only will it be soothing, but it'll also help keep your stomach full so you don't eat like a horse from the munchies, hehe.
