There is a post in Announcements about a new way to handle objects left on public land. Here are some questions and thoughts I had about this proposal: 1) Is it true that when an object reverts to public after the 3-day period has expired, alll scripts and other contents become fully copyable by the at-large population? That seems... shall we say drastic? 2) What happens, financially, when someone claims a public object? 3) You are introducing new properties to objects (various phases of release) -- will there be additional llDetectxxxx() calls made available to identify these objects? 4) Will there be any effect on objects that are already public on public land after this patch. This new policy has some spikey ramifications, just making sure they are all intended Ramifications: - People with huge projects, who release parts to maintain solvency will now pay L$4 per object.
- You craft scripts, upload textures, upload sounds, put them on an object -- all of these things become public after your object is left on public land for the relatively short period of 72 hours.
- A person who moves, releasing their old property, exposes all of the objects owned by others on that property to the risk of becoming public.
- A nefarious person sees an object they want access to in the middle of their property. They release land and then reclaim, leaving unclaimed only the land under the target object. Time passes...
- Giving an object to another by releasing and letting them cliam it may now incur a cost, depending on how it is implemented.
Contrast this with today: I come across some garbage on public land. I temporarily claim the land under the garbage. I delete the garbage. I unclaim the land. This achieves the majority of this proposal without any changes to the server code, and does not expose people's private work to others. I'm having trouble seeing a clear win with the proposal as it stands.

I don't really see the problem.
The only way your precious can become public is if you leave it on public land and no one interacts with it for 72 hours.
This seems positive to me. If you care about something not getting deleted or becoming claimable, you have to not leave it lying around. Small price for garbage collection.
Now, what if someone buys something of yours and then carelessly leaves it lying around. Then maybe some bad person could come and copy it and it wouldn't be your fault. Maybe these publicized objects could be specially locked? So that they're just deletable, not claimable or copyable.

sometimes when newbies like myself experiment with motion in scripts, unexpected things happen, like the object flying off too god knows where. If i cannot locate the item in the deadline, then it will shortly be open to the public.
I'm glad that we are trying different solutions to deal with trash.
But i would also like a more reliable way to find lost objects. The blue dot on the map helps with large items...but when my little HouseMouse runs away, it's very difficult to find.
Maybe if after 3 days it IM-ed owner...I'm abandoned at these coordinates...and then 3 days later it decayed to public, that would at least address the situation of genuinely lost rather than thoughtlessly abandoned.

I also an glad that we are trying different solutions to deal with trash, but i have few concerns with the proposed method. From: someone Originally posted by Wednesday Grimm The only way your precious can become public is if you leave it on public land and no one interacts with it for 72 hours.
here's a couple problems i see: 1. the problem Bel stated - sometimes objects with complex scripts fly away and are difficult to impossible to find. keep in mind that the world is relatively tiny right now(20 sims). imagine 100 or 500 sims, and you can forget about finding your object in 72 hours. also, if it's smaller than 5mx5m it won't show up on the minimap. 2. the problem touched on by Sleeper, which i'll extend - a griefer could drive/fly/push someone elses vehicle(or mouse) to a public area of land, put a box/garage over it and interact with the box/garage until 72 hours have passed. then they could take the vehicle for their own. From: someone Maybe these publicized objects could be specially locked? So that they're just deletable, not claimable or copyable. yes. please. with sugar on top! =] bp
