So tonight, i'm tearing down my old store to make a new scheme, and I get all my primitvies taken down, and I'm flying around and I notice these itty bitty balls called "Surveillance Bugs" with a script named "Surveillance Script" on them.

Now I don't know about you guys and gals, but I really, really, really dislike the idea of people placing "Surveillance" stuff on my land, No build was on, so I'm guessing the PERSONS drug them over there and hid them. I mean these "bugs" are no more than a few CM's in size.

So I see it and I'm thinking, wow, this person probably has access to every thing that has been said in my store, so this concept is sour in my stomach, I call Catherine over, and she does her magic scanning for scripts, and WHAT DO YOU KNOW!!! 2 More!! Placed within distance to hear all the chat said in my house.

For me, this really really makes me angry. All this time I talk to people in my house, and a couple of little wackos who get their kicks off reading what other's said coulda been reading everything that was said in my house for god knows how long. After going to View and turning object beacons on, we got rid of em. Reported to Lindens (Thanks Doug), and well who knows what will happen next.

Sure this is a game, but doing that crap you're crossing over in to people's privacy, even in game, and that, is not cool. So to you 2 idiots, if you read this forum, you know who you are, thanks!

I had an object like this created by a scripter, but, I never used mine for such an evil purpose. I bugged my monorail cars so I could tell if anyone was using them when I was there. Also, I didnt call them that, so, I am sure those aren't mine.

Shame on the person who would do that to you! :(

I live with Malaer in world, and it irks me that someone did this. I can understand having to talk in IM's if you're having a personal conversation, but c'mon.....do i really have to take all my conversations into private because i'm worried that some idiot is logging everything i say?

This is wrong...

*irked*!!

You need a bug sweeper. I sell these items too ;p

Yeah it's pretty well known that you can drop an object that catches chat and sends it anywhere on the grid via IM.

So what I do now and then is sweep my property. It's not absolute based on sensor limits and all, but if you move around a little and do the sweep a few times you can get a pretty accurate picture of what's up.

Sweeper also gives location and owner of the object (if the owner is in the sim). If you detect a scripted object that is named "object" and has no owner, and is in your house, it is probably a good idea to find that item. Remember it might be transparent.

Someone taught me how to do that but I could not imagine someone would use that to bug someone's house! I might be saying something important and confidential and I would be very mad if I knew someone was listening in.

Bad people with new toys

Did you check the owner/creator of the bugs? That should give you a future report to send to Linden Labs...

Actually, I had that conversation Darwin. Nothing in the community standards says it's an offense was the last interpretation I heard. The player can be told "that's not cool" and that's about it as I understand. If this has changed or is not the approach for dealing with this sort of thing nowadays I dunno.

Community Standards Violation
05-27-2003 11:38
Hi All,

The community Standards do expressly forbid this type of activity. See here:

Privacy
Residents are entitled to a reasonable level of privacy with regards to their Second Lives. While privacy rights in a virtual space are perhaps even more complex than those in the physical world, we are committed to working with the community to protect against invasions of your privacy. We fully expect in-world privacy guidelines to evolve with the Second Life community. Examples of privacy invasion in violation of SL Community Standards include:

Remotely monitoring in-world conversations without the knowledge of all parties involved.

Please report this type of listening device via the abuse reporter and include the name of the creator and owner.

Note to people using "listen bugs": Linden Labs places user privacy at the top of the list when it comes to community standard violations. To that end, we take a zero-tolerance approach to listening devices. 'nuff said.

Hope this answers some questions.
