Here's my list

Free
-----
- GIMP (for textures and screenshots)
- Picasa (for managing snapshots / cropping them and exporting them)
- Blender (for animations)

Low Cost
-----------
- ACE HIGH MP3 WAV WMA OGG Converter (for converting to inworld sounds)

Commercial
--------------
- Poser 5 (for animations)
- PhotoShop (for textures)

Any others? Even small utilities would be interesting.. I am especially looking for a free sound converter to recommend.

Bah. I came into this thread expecting juicy details of essential resources that enhance your second life experience... such as smoking paraphernalia and sex toys. I didnt realise it was gonna be a boring old list of crappy software.

Allow me to add mine since I bothered to come here, tho:

Bejeweled.

...For all those times I crash and I can't log back in. Which is a lot. And for the 5 minutes it takes for me to actually get logged in. As well as after having just tp'd and while waiting for the building I'm already stuck in to load so I can see what the hell it is I'm stuck in, now that LL have plugged that evil nasty phantom avie 'bug'.

I was told about a handy little thing called Eyedropper.exe, which gives you the RGB numbers of whatever your mouse happens to be pointing at. Great for matching hair/editing attachments to match etc.

It's free too. :)

Yeah. Can be. I've had Poser 3 free about a bajillion times on PC Magazine covermount CDs and DVDs. Along with things like Carerra, Truespace, PaintShop Pro etc. They give away versions that are a couple out of date in the hope you'll upgrade with the 'special reader offer'. Of course, you never do. You just wait til the next version comes out on covermount.

A few free open-sourcers to mention... PHP's GD library and ImageMagick have both made a few of my fun toys possible, like the GIF 89a to SecondLife animated texture converter thingy I made:

http://www.SLBoutique.com/anim/

Its free to use, inputs a GIF 89a and outputs and SL compliant targa image as well as the script code necessary to animate the texture on the prim.

The only downside is that it does not carry transparency from the 256 color GIF 89a pallette through to the 32-bit targa pallette. This can easily be handle with a click of the magic wand background erased tool in photoshop, or select color range, however. The heavy lifting is done.

Blaze, ever thought of doing a Blender tutorial? I've never heard of someone using it to a degree of success in SL, like I have with the GIMP. I'm curious on how it stacks up against Poser.

Regards,

-Flip
