Hey everyone. Well, the new university is taking off [Second Life Forums > What's Happenin' > Projects > SL University]. Right now we're trying to come up with a curriculum for Phase I (the first "semester"?). I thought I would list some of our class ideas, and see what the general public thought about them. For the record, we're not looking to teach anything that is currently officially taught, or to create a monopoly on resident instruction. Rather, we'd like to add to the mix, by teaching intermediate to advanced classes in scripting, building, physics, economics, landscaping, graphics, etc, and trying to meet the needs of the community. Here are some class ideas that we are prepared to teach if there is enough interest:
Second Life Design: - Landscaping - Building (advanced) - Textures (advanced) - Economics Linden Scripting Language: - Rezzing - Sensors - Inter-script communication - Databases - Rotations - Position and Movement - Particle Systems - Controls - Permissions - String Parsing - Vector Math - Physics Graphics: - Photoshop Tutorial - Paintshop Pro Tutorial

In addition to the list above (which I think is quite comprehensive from a technical/building/graphics point of view), Id like to see some that are devoted to the . .how shall I say . . softer sciences. Most of the courses youve listed are devoted to programming/graphics/building - Id like to see more 'How to play effectively' classes. Most of you will probably think that they are geared more towards introductory players, but Im finding that as my skills in graphics and building are growing, I still know next to nothing about the whos and wheres of SL, except by trial and (in the case of the combat sims) error. Such as: Geography (sim layout, specialized sims, must see locations) - for newbies like me Sociology (event hosting, how to specialize a sim, increasing your ratings) Combat - this is an entirely different scene than the traditional build/script SL experience. Id say more people would participate if they werent concerned about being pummeled into submission their first visit to a combat-allowed sim. Local Histories - a review of the people that helped found SL, whether they still exist here or not. Understanding why that Red Dragon statue, or the Sitting Toilet Man statue is there is as much fun as actually seeing it . . . Im sure there are more Ill think of after I hit Submit at the bottom, but I think Ive gotten my idea across - more social sciences are needed. But an excellent idea for a university! Keep up the good work! Reese

I think there should also be an "MBA Track"... not that we need a bunch of empty suits running around SL! Classes I can think of:
- Tax Law - Managing a Business - Economics - Marketing - Commerce
BTW, I really applaud all the work you're doing on the University. I think it's a wonderful idea!
