When exactly did SL start admiting people for its closed beta? I'm just wondering how fairly noobish I am in comparison to some of the other people who simply "signed up to try a fun game" not that that's my ONLY reason well you know, just a small question...

From what I heard, the alpha group began last summer in a place called Linden World (a much cruder place than what we have now), and it was "upgraded" to closed beta in November when they put the existing "world" online. A lot of the old-timers I've come across started in December...lucky them!
Anybody have any idea of when open beta begins? I heard it would be March, but I have a feeling that it will be delayed a bit. I also wonder what the place will be like when SL finally goes 1.0...lol..considering how much its changed in the < 3weeks since I've come on board.

hmm december sounds about right for the first wave of betas...i think we were in world for 2-3 weeks before new people started showing up... not sure though, it was so long ago... i think that 1 rl day = 17 sl days heh, that figure is debatable of course. if you want to here stories about the beginning, talk to steller or paul

A little Second Life history
02-11-2003 14:05
Second Life first went online last March as LindenWorld. The very first resident was Steller Sunshine, and the first thing she built was a...beanstalk! We were thrilled to see it climb right into the sky. Steller was followed quickly by Paul Zeeman and Mac Beach. Other very Early Creators included Buhbuhcuh Fairchild, bUTTONpUSHER Jones, Nada Epoch, Nobisan Wu and Flyk Escher. All helped shape the original world -- while putting up with innumerable weird bugs!
The alpha LindenWorld was replaced by Second Life in November -- new name, new interface, new land. If you check out the Governor's Mansion on Clementina and my cabin on the island on Taber, you'll see the sole surviving structures from LindenWorld.
Since the beta was opened we've had thousands of applicants and are adding hundreds of new users each week. Next up...public beta later this spring, and commercial launch early this summer.
