Join Linden Lab as we celebrate our Second Anniversary FREE Account Giveaway! For a limited time new subscribers can join Second Life for free.* Starting 12 AM PDT July 7th, 2005 through 11:59 PM PDT July 13th, 2005 (7 AM GMT July 7th thru 6:59 AM July 14th GMT), simply visit Second Life (http://secondlife.com) and sign up.

Are you telling all your friends? How many new users will sign up? How many will become land owners? How many will log on a couple of times never to return? Will grief levels rise? Will the last name, Matador, finally be retired? Are you ready for the population explosion?

I am just curious, no one seems to be talking about this.

I have already asked most of the people I know to join up and if they werent interested at the $10 level, Im not sure I want to let them know for free. I wont get a bonus for them signing up during this promo, so Im not really gung-ho to pimp it for free.

It is exciting to consider a big influx of people, I just hope it is not too problematic. I hope a bunch of griefers dont sign on and go nuts. I expect things to be really busy during this promo and for a few weeks afterwards. I think I am ready to jump in and help out, but wow, its going to be crazy around here. Anyone have any good armor for cheap?

I'm not gung-ho to do it either. I'd rather get my referral bonuses.

But I think it's a good idea. And remember, it should attract people just anyway - I mean, not necessarily people we refer; just people who have thought about giving the game a try. (Unless there's something I'm misunderstanding about it all.)

I'm trying to promote it. I'd rather my friends came here - I don't care that much about the $1000 referral bonus.

I want Second Life to grow - if nothing else more members = more business for me.

The only that scares me is that there is an update to 1.6.8 planned for the day before this promotional account giveaway starts, and we all know what a mess SL is for days following a update. The WORST time for a new resident to start is right around update time, not only do they have the confusing wonder of figuring out SL, but they also find login problems, TP problems, crashes...all the things that go with updates.

I am going to tell friends, but will also be warning them to not sign up until Friday or Saturday when the hemorrhaging should have stopped. :p

.... OH HELL. Unless 1.6.8 is an ace up LL's sleeve, this'll be like putting razor blades and bits of glass into free ice cream cones.

Oh yes, people are excited about free accounts, BUT.... what will they need to sign up with? Will I need to get a prepaid card so I can just make it an effortless deal?

EDIT

Okay, I looked at the changes list, shouldn't be anything too major.
But... "Fixed an issue where an extra simulator sometimes ran on a machine."
Could this be the server flux issues on private islands?

I've been wondering about some of these questions, too. My friends and family either don't game or don't have broadband, so that kind of rules out me trying to recruit any new members. I am looking forward to seeing what happens during the week of the free account giveaway, I think it could be pretty exciting.

All in all, it's an interesting and possibly brilliant move on LL's part. Let's all cross our fingers and hope for stable sims and a flawless upgrade tomorrow! :)

(Oh, and another question is... how many bulletin boards/forums that you belong to outside of SL will you be posting a notice on regarding the free accounts?)

I'm thinking it might have to do with this question posted by Michi Lumin a short while back.

If someone wanted to put together a Welcome Basket for this flood of n00bs, I'd be willing to add some useful stuff.

I didn't spam my friends and aquaintences during the vive campaigns and I won't do it now. I invite people if I think they'll be really keen on the idea.

Ultimately, people will have to be able to freely browse the w3b just as they do the web now. Individual sites (regions) may charge an access fee, but there won't be any cost to log into the infrastructure (grid). This will be an interesting test.
