I think it was in Clara, and I wasn't around at that time to see it.

In fact, if anyone has a bunch of pictures of what some of the sims looked like when SL was newer, I'd love to see them. Website? Anyone?

was that the place Candy Apple used to hold her events? I remember the boardwalk from my earliest days, just not sure if it was the right boardwalk. Used to be bingo there?

I feel your pain. I was making a deliberate effort to document the old builds that were everyday places back in late 2003 and I had a hard drive failure and lost over 8gb of pictures. I was crushed for about two weeks after that happened.

The old boardwalk was in Varney, right next to Clara. I will look through my snapshots in world (most are named snapshot, doh!) and send you some stuff I find in your neighborhood. Dont hold your breath though, I will organize my pics one of these days.

If its Candie's Boardwalk...

I would have to dig but I do have some. Gosh I so miss Candie Apple and all the great things she contributed to SL. I learned a lot in the early days from her. How to make jewelry and build seasonal items. And much much more.

IM me in world and I will look. I have so many pics called snapshots lol...

Candie bought the Boardwalk when the Lindens decided to sell the land and builds. She redesigned it some, got rid of some of the empty stalls, but kept the theme.

When the Lindens owned it I always thought it was a little creepy. It looked just like your typical pier with sideshow attractions in stalls. The normal stuff, knock the bottles over and other game type stuff. None of it worked, it was just for show, but the creepy part was the sounds. They had boardwalk sounds. People talking, seagulls, waves and bells and whistles. But no one in sight and nothing moving. Creepy.

The Boardwalk was actually in Varney, just across the border from Clara. After Candie won the old Boardwalk in auction (I think), she rebuilt it and regularly held events there. That came to an end during the Grimmy Moonflower reign of griefing.

After looking through an old hard drive, this image is the only one I could find of the old boardwalk. Note that the benches are the same as the ones that were at the old Welcome Area, and the deck textures were also used on the old Welcome Area. If I can turn up more shots, I will post them.

The boardwalk was one of the first places that I ever visited and was a good hangout area for someone to clear their heads or do just people watch. Was a nice scenary.

Yep - before Candy owned it. I remember when they auctioned it off -- on the forums no less... imagine trying to do that now :P

Siggy.

After going in world and sifting through old pictures, I have turned up another shot. At the time, I was collecting shots of sleeping avs. I'm not going to identify the av in the shot, but it was taken over the old Boardwalk.

Edit: If you look closely, you can see that parts of the Boardwalk are missing. I'm not sure of exactly why they are missing, but there were two possible reasons. Back in the day, prim looting was popular. Rezzing a prim cost 10 Linden, which was refunded to you when you de-rezzed it. However, de-rezzing stray prims on public land also gave you 10 Linden. I'm not sure if this was the actual reason, because land permissions were different back then, and I never took time to learn the rules of beta land management.

The other reason for builds with missing prims was prim decay. Objects left on public land would eventually start to disappear, prim by prim after a certain amount of time (I never knew how long this took). By the time Candie got the land, a great deal of the prims were missing, leaving a surreal collection of gravity defying half structures.

I played boardwalk bingo a lot when I started. I can't find any pictures though except for this not so great in-game snapshot:( I think that is the boardwalk, not positive though.
