make sure to go through all the things on the prelude tour (the path when you just start).
Experiment a lot, talk to people, as questions, and play with ALT + mouse drag, ALT-CTRL + mouse drag, ALT-Shift + mouse drag.

Welcome! Great to have you. I think you will find most residents will freely offer advice. That is what makes our community so special. However, if you did not meet one already in your journey through Prelude, you can always look for a Liaison to ask your questions. These residents have the last name Linden. Remember, if you ever want to brush up on the SL basic skills you learned in Prelude, you can find a identical version in the island chain out East. It is region named Jessie located next to region Welsh. Best of luck in your Second Life.

Welcome Supergluey and Raptor!!
SL is a wonderful place with many beautiful sites. I suggest you take time to explore the regions before deciding to purchase land.
I met many new players who asked me what now? What's next?
I think the Lindens have done a great job in the new Welcome area in Ahern. If you take a look around the welcome area you will see several titles : Create, Explore, and few otrs i can't remember. Pick 1 and go for it!
My point is you can do whatever you like in SL. You can create, you can explore or whatever. It's up to you.
