Well you got the right forums, but your grammer scares me. Please tell me English isn't your first language.

Darwin, how do you know Kentro's Grammer and why does she scare you? Ooooh, wait, you mean "grammar." Heh. How does that quote about people who live in glass houses go?

What do Grammers and Grampers have to do with SL anyway?

Both grammer and grammar are correct. The E form is more common in America, and the A form more common outside it but theres nothing wrong with choosing either.

Eggy, I did a quick search of four online dictionaries, and in none of them did it say "grammer" was an acceptable alternative spelling for the word "grammar" (Sources: American Heritage Dictionary, Merriam-Webster Dictionary, Dictionary.com and YourDictionary.com).

I would be very grateful if you could cite your source in this matter, Eggy, I have a degree in English and hate to be behind the times in these sorts of things.

Actually from my experience (I have three English degrees) it isn't ever spelled "grammer" unless it's perhaps a British version of the word of which I am unaware?

Beryl, Zana et al, this was something I discussed a few years ago in a class, and to quote my former English professor, languages are organic - They evolve. Linguists and dictionaries are fundamentally descriptive, rather than normative, and often lag behind the real language in their description, or even contain blatant mistakes.
The "real" language, therefore, is that which is currently spoken or written, not what comes in the dictionary.
The fact that a mind-boggling number of americans have misteriously opted for the E spelling makes it an increasingly acceptable alternative. After all, there had to be some point in the past where "neighbour" changed into "neighbor", for instance.
I believe this is happening due to pronunciation differences between UK and US users. In the UK, people usually stress the second A more than in the US, where it is a bit more mute. Therefore it is a natural evolution, especially if you consider that other similarly-pronounced words usually end in ER.
He believes, and did a good job convincing me, that this is more of a trend than simply a common mistake. Lots of people are convinced that this is the "proper" spelling, and 50 years from now or even a lot sooner, you will see "grammer" in every american dictionary and eventually the A spelling will fade and be regarded as a britishism.
There are many such trends in the English language, for example, the phrasal construct "the A of B" (as opposed to "B's A";) is gaining more acceptance. My professor's theory is that the English language is being influenced by a massive influx of non-native speakers whose original language used the former construct by default. Such is the case with Romance languages for instance.
Nowadays we are getting MORE non-natives speaking and writing English than natives, since English is the new Latin, and modern communication technologies have reduced the world to the size of a village.
A prime example of this is "Informatics". It used to be considered a "false friend", and usage of "Computer Science" or "Information Science" was recommended instead. Nowadays it is rapidly gaining popularity and even being included in some of the newer dictionaries.

I'll be ok unless language turns into what you find on the 12yr old AOL translator. GAH!

Funny you should mention that MJ, because I was just about to agree with Eggy and continue on to say that in 20 years written English will probably (and unfortunately) look more like the SMS and IM shorthand that all the kids are using today.

But I don't think we've quite arrived at "grammer" being acceptable in the English language.

Besides, "seperate" is much higher on the list. :)

So anyway, about this outlaw costume...

Should one construe that statement to imply that you limit your help to those who pass your proofreading .. and the rest are subject to ridicule?

You aren't one of those misguided people who think that proper construction of English prose is somehow related to intelligence or even worse - social merit?

To the original poster : While I am indeed capable of composing prose in a manner which undoubtably exceeds some people's expectations (or perhaps even abilities), I harbor no such bias, being a somewhat enlightened creature. Send me an IM if you see me in-world and I will be most pleased to assist you.

To the red pen brigade - I didn't proofread this post so perhaps upon inspection you might find some errors worthy of ridicule. Please do so without delay, as the amusement I shall find from visualizing you as my old fat 7th grade English teacher will most assuredly brighten my day considerably.
