Well it's official !

If you have as little as 5KB of spare bandwitdth.
If you have a microphone or headset (9 RL$ most places)
If you have a desire to hear other residents speak in world.

SecondLife Communications is now available !

We have been running a small ALPHA test using a windows TeamSpeak server. We have had up to 20 users per night and it has been great TALKING to Bel Muse and BBC as well as all my Templar friends.

We have decided to purchase a LINUX Teamspeak server and put it on a fat pipe with lots of bandwidth as part of the next phase of tests. This system is now up and should handle 100+ users with good quality voice. Best of all it is free for users to try.

We have set up 10 channels listed as Lobby and Channels 1 to 9.
In addition some groups like Tyrell Corporation and the Templars have made arrangements for private channels. Contact me in world for more information if your group is interested in a private channel.

To get on and begin using voice communications while in world do the following:

1. visit www.teamspeak.org and download the RC2 client. It is free.

2. Install the RC2 client on your system, plug in microphone

3, Under the Connection menu item select Quick Connect.and enter the following information:

Server Address: 64.156.241.169:8768
Nickname : Enter your name (example- Sturm Valen)
Login Name: leave blank
Password : linden

You will be connected to the SecondLife Teamspeak server and placed in the "Lobby"

Once there, we will "authorize" you to register and you can then select a channel to go to and begin using the system.

Start SecondLife and off you go. I use the Push to Talk Key as F12 but you may set it up any way you like under the Settings menu item.

Oh, by the way the Voice server is up 24X7 so you can get on and chat with other SLers when SL is down.

I will be setting up a SecondLife Communications office downtown somewhere which will have lots of examples and you may see some of our Radio Towers going up around the world as well.

Please come help us test this new Beta Voice server and begin enjoying voice communcations in Second Life .

IM me in game if you need help.

Nice Sturm,
I like the towers going up, perhaps a 2nd tower design near those that have the private channels??

Also, with the themed communities coming up, if the groups building don't mind it'd be nice to see maybe a telegraph office in old west etc to cover towers there.

What's the purpose of the radio towers? Decorative or informative? If informative, we might be able to incorporate that info into a smoke signal "tower" in the NAV community..

Thanks, Sturm! This is a very cool project you have undertaken.

I think the teamspeak server is easy to use and has really good sound quality. It's been a great to talk with you and the other Templars via voice. We've had some great conversations that would not have been possible just thru chat text alone.

It was also fun to melee with you guys in the outlands and be able to talk smack over teamspeak at the same time. That was a blast!

Shebang

Thanks for the suggestion

I am working on a seamless interface between the TS server and SecondLife, so I was planning to have the towers be a place where you can signup and interact with the Teamspeak server inworld. All I need is a very small area.

I won't be doing that for a while but would like to start working on it.

i went out and bought one of those headphone/microphone combos today just to give it a try... so far, i think i like it, and it definately has potential for when in the game... i will update as i experiment with it more.

as for the seemless transition between IW and the teamspeak server, it is totally do-able, as long as they can write a script for the server to process the information.
