As the title says, what is the difference between making somebody a friend and just having their card?
Thanks,

A friend of mine asked me this once. She just started chatting with me while I was building or making clothes or whatever and I told her that I was busy and I would chat with her later if I could.
She asked me, "Why do people keep calling cards if they don't talk to each other?" I had no reply. It's true I have a BUNCH of calling cards and I maybe chat with 3 or 4 people from there. The reason why I keep so many is to have contacts in case I suddenly need help with a build or have someone on my list who codes that I can hire to help me. Stuff like that. I certainly do not speak with each contact everytime I log in. That would be too much IMO. It may sound cruel but it's the truth. She wanted to delete me because I didn't talk to her all the time, she never did though.... _____________________

The biggest and most important difference is that you can't be tracked if you just give someone your Calling Card. Which can be given by right clicking on someone and selecting more and the give card. But they can still stay in touch with you. I try to sort the cards I'm given into different folders. One for say neighbors in the sim I live in. Another folder for potential clients and another one for people I like doing business with. Then I can click and IM them either online of offline. You can also contact a group of people this way. I think Calling Cards are way underused and misunderstood. Sometimes I reject someone when they offer friendship and suggest we exchange cards, which then turns into a lesson on how to give a calling card. Another drawback to friends is that if you have the preference set to show you when people log in and off, which you might want to do for "real friends", it also shows everyone you exchanged friendship with. For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel's sake. The great affair is to move. Robert Louis Stevenson _____________________

For me......
I have a bunch of calling cards. But a friend is someone I hangout with and talk to alot. A calling card person is just someone who offered me their card. I clean our my cards from time to time. But I have 5 or 6 folders. Best Friends, Good Friends, Friends, Family, And People. The friends I talk to the most and hang out with the most are in Best Friends. Good Friends are my good friends I hang out with sometimes. Friends are people I talk to but dont know really well. Family is my SL family. And People are the people that just hand me cards. Cards are cards to me. It's what you make of them that counts. Hope this helps. ![]() ~Mex _____________________

Calling Cards are like business cards, or at least that's how I use them. The Friends system is there for just that... friends. It tells you when they're online and such. But I mostly use Calling Cards for business associates and such.
