I hope I'm not asking a question that's already been answered somewhere, however....
After the beta is over and SL is open to the world, what happenes to everything we have been working on ? Do we keep it all, or will we start fresh ? And, if it does all get wiped off the server, will there be a way to save our stuff and bring it back in ?
Like I said, if this has been addressed before, please forgive another noob mistake. I'll line up for my lashes at the welcome area tonight.
Tracey

it has been brought up in world, but not on the forums. Nothing is wiped, indeed the intention is for the beta to provide the beginnings of what will be SL when it goes public. Also, there are no character wipes, so anything you have in your inventory stays there unless you delete it. So even if they do move us again (the alpha world was different than this beta world, all they did was copy our characters over, so we had all our money, and everything in our inventory) you essentially lose nothing

Let me add to Nada... well change a word or 2. They don't PLAN on wipes. PLAN = they don't see themselves wiping the servers just because, but if they really need to wipe to fix something they will have to. Hey it would suck... but it's beta.

I vote for letting us tag what we want to stay - between beta phases and going live. Then delete everything else - This was the 50 objects I know Ive lost all over the place would go away

I can see how this would suck for a lot of people (including myself), but, in order to be fair I would recommend a wipe of everything. This way, everyone starts out equal in the beginning of the final version...

Sorry to sound so mean and evil but Spark a total wipe would defeat the purpose of learning in SL, It would be counter productive for anyone in SL and also for the expanding of this awsome online community.
Reason being, all the scripts that were painfully thought out and learned, all the trial and error work. If there would be a total loss of data. I thik SL would suffer greatly. All the great accomplishments....GONE...
Therefore all or most or even some of the great scriptors on here may think that all their thought and effort was wasted, therefore they may leave SL. Then where would SL be? It would truly be a fresh start. But one of which would/could damage the final goals set for SL as a whole

very true, but what about the people who will have never played it before, how would they feel when everyone around them has all of this stuff, and they have nothing. It just doesnt seem fair in my opinion.

What about the people who join a year after the community goes live? They will feel left out too....do we just delete all the stuff again?
Already existing houses, objects would attract more people, since there are things to see and learn from.

And...

What about the people who join daily? When I joined, and I saw everything that had been built, I was kind of jealous. I saw BBC's big complex, and he was a famous scripter and all that stuff, and I was jealous that I hadn't gotten in earlier. I only heard about the game from someone when playing The Sims Online.

Btw just a side note to agree with the general idea to an extent, I to was very overwhelmed to see all the awsome projects when I first came online. I never thought I would be that good to make such things. Heck when I actually learned about scripting(not learned but learned it existed here) I felt quite overpowered in this area. Since I have no programming experience beyond apple basic, and commodore basic, I felt quite overwhelmed here because I saw all the neat things scripting can do. I felt I could never grasp it. But that just drives me to learn it more. Yes present tence "drives" I still get overwhelmed, I am no where near what I would like to be as far as building and scripting. I am still ripping apart scripts to see what makes em tick, and break. If you look close at my building you will see it is a basic structure. I don't have the skills to make intricate details yet. Sure some of the stuff on my dance floor is cool, But the best stuff I either got help with or is a borrow/takeoff from someone elses handy work. As I use other peoples work to learn from, seeing other people more advanced stuff keeps me going to learn more. I have been in here for around a month now and even though im not at the knowledge point I want to be, I am still impressed with what I've learned. Besides irl you go to school to learn paying tons of $. for 2 to 4 years of school to learn what people know that have done things for years. Learning is a factor of life.....So it should be in a SL

everything in the world, although intimidating at first, becomes inspiration.

From: someone Originally posted by Nada Epoch everything in the world, although intimidating at first, becomes inspiration. Well put Nada. From: someone in order to be fair I would recommend a wipe of everything. I'm with Charlie. Gimme a break, that's TSO style. NO WIPES ARE PLANNED and it's gonna stay that way!

I was a early creator before Secondlife became a reality, I lost my church and 2 houses I was working on there. I say wipes suck! All the hard work that goes into a place should stay regardless, unless it can't for technical reasons. It looks to me that Second Life will be expanding and all builds will probably stay put, good news to me. You can't start from scratch to please newcomers, nothing would ever get built. Use the existing builds as inspiration and strive to better the place with your content. Build on guys and gals!
