I'd *love* to know by what margin he was elected, and who the other frontrunners were. I'd say this doesn't bode well for a more progressive Catholic church.

I wonder if this will exascerbate the dissent that has been brewing among the South American/African clergy...

Ratzinger was the huge favorite with all the bookmakers during the week, which in itself made him a longshot. Only two heavy favorites have won in the past.

He was the chief ideological advisor to JP2 and holds a lot of political power in the Vatican, so it is really not surprising that he won. Catholics cannot expect many changes. At 78 I don't think he is going to be changing his opinion on many issues.

Oh well, no matter who is Pope, I will continue to be a sinner in the eyes of the church.

Yeah. It's majority of 2/3+1, but what I'm really curious about was how many "*grumble* *grumble* Ratzinger *grumble*" votes there were.

Only the new Pope will be privy to that information. I believe I heard it on the news that the votes are tallied and burned. Then the results are sealed forever to everyone except the Pope.
