Given the proposed changes in permissions, I just have to wonder how soon devices/scripts will exist whose sole purpose is to duplicate in-world materials. Anyone care to wager? We have lots of time to :
A) Plan for it
B) A scripter to create it
C) Content owners to have a collective heart-attack
Any thoughts?

How would it work? Use llgetprimitiveparams to reconstruct an object? What about the scripts? How is that possible?

Uh, it's rather simple to code your own really. The annoying part is that you have to drop a script in every prim manually...

And you can't drop it in no-modify objects, which is a good thing.

I've been toying with the idea of building a cloneing script system, just i haven't had a good reason as of yet to do so. Basicly i respect the object creators to much too do that to thier works.

I haven't coded one either, but I've seen it in action. I first became aware of it when the original creator asked me for advice on mass deployment of scripts... which AFAIK can't be done.

The point isn't whether someone did it 'first'.
The point is how the permissions system as proposed will deal with the inevitability of someone making a 'service' that exists only to distribute copies of moddable items. It will happen sooner or later, just wondered what the implications were.

So are object copiers makeable?
Does llGetAgentSize() work on objects?

Jack - yes, they are. To the second, beats me, doesn't seem likely.

The implications will be the first civil suits in a small claims court over SL copyright stuff.
Don your lawyer hats, everyone, we're gonna have some fun.

Jack, of course you'd respond with the most *unlikely* scenario. The one I'm seeing is say, vehicles, 30 prims, completely achievable by various means. Right now, because they are all linked, you can only get the full information from the root prim (unless, god forbid, this has changed somehow) and the rest remain somewhat obscure. With the new system, I break the wrapper, unlink (making sure it isn't physical, lol), then go through and duplicate to my hearts content.
That is where I see the problem, but I'm sure there are many more examples.

Ahh so linking will protect current builds against a copier? I didn't know the duping was in the context of the new permissions. I'm not worried about them. They are a long ways off and I've had objects sold that I didn't want sold. It happens, all we can do is pout. Maybe the new CSR tools they are building will let Lindens delete stolen objects. * fingers crossed, holding breath *

Linking doesn't prevent copying, just makes it more difficult presently. Under the new permissions system as proposed, it seems this will not be a hurdle, as you can unlink and do what you will with the objects. At least reading their relevant information at least. More than enough.

Anyone else think it's ironic that the new permission system cannot protect objects from getting copied but can protect a script that does the copying?
