New potential customers on Orientation Island are now shown a notecard dispenser object at the end of their trip through OI. The notecard they receive is called "Explorer Guide", and the text part of the contents is as follows:

From: someone
*** EXPLORER GUIDEBOOK ***

The entire world of Second Life is ready for you to explore. It's a BIG place, full of new people and new experiences!

Whenever you start your travels in a new land, it's always handy to have a Guidebook to help you quickly find some fun places. This Explorer Guidebook will direct you to a few unique and interesting things in Second Life to get you started on your adventure!

REMEMBER TO CLICK THE "KEEP" BUTTON at the bottom of this window when you're done reading. This will save the Guidebook in your INVENTORY (your Inventory is kind of like a backpack to hold all your saved stuff).

Whenever you want to read this Guidebook again, just click on the INVENTORY button on the bottom right of your screen, scroll down to the folder "NOTECARDS," and click on it. You'll see "Explorer Guidebook" listed in that folder, and you can double-click on it to open it whenever you like.

------------------------------------------------------------
How do I get to these places?
-------------------------------------------------------------
When you click on the teleport links below, you will see a popup window that says "Copy this item to your inventory?" Click on the LEFT button that says "Copy & Show on Map." Your MAP window will open. IMMEDIATELY click the TELEPORT button and you will be sent to the closet Telehub location. You'll see a RED ARROW on your screen with a distance to the location (in meters). Just FLY towards the red arrow, and you'll see the location marked on your screen by a TALL RED POLE. That's where you need to go!

-------------------------------------------------------------

1) TAKE A BALLOON TOUR OF LINDEN VILLAGE

Want to see where Lindens (employees of Linden Lab, the creators of Second Life) work and live? Take a Balloon Tour of Linden Village, a special place in Second Life where Lindens have created homes and special places to meet with Residents. Just sit in the balloon, say "go" and you'll be whisked off on a tour of the area. There's free popcorn and lemonade, and a deck where you can sit and chat while watching the balloons soar overhead.

Did you breeze through Orientation Island? No worries...lots of Residents do that. But you'll have a chance to go through the helpful tutorials again whenever you like! Once you leave Orientation Island, you cannot go back, but there's a great place in Dore that has all of the same tutorials. The theme of the area is a wonderful old Japanese castle. Stop by and practice all your Second Life skills!

After eating all that ice cream, you might need to exercise a bit. Check out the Temple Ruins in Alviso (also known as Lauks Nest)! There are ancient walkways all across this mountain, with hidden idols and lush vegetation everywhere.

When you arrive at the landmark, be sure to click on the black Information box next to the birdbath for more details about the area. Watch the bees pollinating the flowers (some of them are carnivorous!), and if you visit at night you'll see flying globugs! Try to find the entrance to the Pyramid and explore the spooky interior.

Look for the Mushroom Couch at top of mountain. It's a great place to relax and watch the sunrise with a friend.

Ok, it seems to be a well put together guide. It allows a new player to see some of the sights of SL. Allow more independance, which I think is a good thing.

It occurs to me that at each of the places they have listed in the notecard, there should be a dispenser that gives out the same notecard.

Also it seems to me that it would be nice to have this info on a webpage, with some kind of animated pictures like avi files or whatever the current best "video clip" format is.

Torley, if I am seeing correctly, the Welcome Area is not one of the choices. Is that right?

If the several Orientation Islands all have no enter at the Welcome Area option , then this is a significant change in policy.

It's the same on OI2.

[Edit]

The little rotating Linden hand dispenser still sends people to the WA, Suez.

The different WA's wouldn't be a bad idea. Not sure if that's redudant though with the other WA links around.

I would be more than happy to put one of the dispensers at the museum. But not sure if that's exactly needed or not, if they already have a notecard that leads them to a location, is another one needed? I suppose they could have deleted it, or maybe someone else wants to take the tour.

Overall I think it's a good idea to give newbies some cool places to explore right off the bat (Pathfinder's Picks still rocks too!). A problem seems to be getting newbies to read *any* signs at all at the OI though. I personaly did and encourage friends to do the same, but I know there are many who just skip the whole thing and teleport off.

Which then becomes a whole nother issue of "Should the WA locations be more improved for this kinda thing?" and/or "Should the OI be renovated/rebuilt in some way to accomidate it?"... but again... whole nother issue.

I've been noticing that alot of these new LL signs have some unique art and alot of 3D renderings (which can sadly make our own world look a little worse ;p). Wondering out of curosity whose doing these cool images?

Edit to add: Sue I appreciate you giving updates on the OI like this, I often wonder what's going on over there myself since I can't exactly see. So thank you and please keep it up!

I'm purty sure new Residents are still coming into the WA, I saw several come out at the landing pad, one after another in white and purple shirts.

Prolly the option to go to WA is there, just not in that notecard. :)

Well Phooey!!

I want to see what happens if they just come into privately owned parcels.

I suspect this way of doing it will get more coming in at the WA and less coming in the other places as compared to the multiple sign display.

The rotating hand does indeed just give out a notecard and a landmark to teleport to the welcome area, in the case I have access to the landmark is named Welcome Area 4 and has a description of Welcome Area 1.

Do all noobs come in at just one of the telehubs or do they alternate between the 4?

The notecard says:

From: someone
Landmarks and Teleportation
---------------------------

Now that you've learned many of the skills you'll use in Second Life, you're ready to join the Second Life community! To do this, you'll have to teleport to the mainland where you will find activities you can enjoy such as shopping and games or meeting places where you will meet others to socialize with and just hang out.

You have just been offered a Landmark to the "Welcome Area" - Click the 'Teleport' button and you will be sent there!

Welcome Area

Start your Second Life by experiencing the central gathering place in-world. The Welcome Area is the perfect place to introduce yourself to the community and meet a few new friends.

The landmark I got on OI2 was, too, a "WA1" pointing at WA4.

I think they may all be the same place, when you Map it, where does it come up as?

Or do you mean the seperate pads? Like the one in Bonifacio, the one in Door, etc.?

That'd be cool if they alternated.

The one named Welcome Area 4 with a description of Welcome Area 1 maps to the Morris telehub, that is the one that is being given out by the hand.

A landmark from a bit earlier, when there where four signs on display, named Welcome Area 3 with a description of Welcome Area 2 maps to the Bonifacio telehub.

It would appear we have WA1=Dore, WA2=Ahern, WA3=Bonifactio, and WA4=Morris.

Presumably clicking the "teleport to" options in the Explorer Guidebook bypasses the Welcome Areas and goes straight to the destination shown in the guidebook - no wait, they probably don't go right to the destination but instead to the nearest telehub, like the Explorer Guidebook says.

You can't map the landmarks from within Orientation Island because the map in OI doesn't include anything but OI.

When you take the ballon tour offered in the Guidebook, the camera angle is mostly looking at the empty and boring sky, and a noob might well have no idea that the camera can be adjusted.

Suezanne,

You mean it really does say 'closet teleporter location'?

Yes, that is what it says, the notecard one gets on a first visit to SL has at least one typo in it, and the landmark given out by the rotating hand sign has a description with a different welcome area number than the welcome area number used in the name of the landmark.

This shouldn't be surprising, after all, the parrot that is supposed to give you a kiss didn't work for the longest time, and might still not work.

I think a lot of people used to get sent to the "closet teleporter locations", they are inside the telehub prims. This problem was reported quite frequently a while back.
