Hello all,
I'm curious to know of some landmarks out there that contain content in the web-sense of the word. What I mean is, say, a newspaper stand with clickable newspapers, art galleries that contain titled artwork with clickable links to external sites, or Virtual Hallucinations (which educates the visitor about a particular psychiatric disorder) and even places like the Royal Arcade, a place that contains coin-op replicas that link to external emulated game sites.
I'm in the midst of doing this very thing with TMK, including, for instance, a book review, featured musical artists (for the background music), and an art gallery with active links to the artists.
As the work grows and I approach re-launching the property, I'm just curious to know if there are others such as me that are trying to make the world of Second Life resemble a web-page in some respects, with active or cycled content that preserves interest in the property. While I love the architecture and just plain uniqueness of SL, there are many times when the world seems to resemble little more than big, empty boxes which, after the cool factor fades, seem lacking.
Just my two gil,

This is like, my very first day on SL, but I'm already super excited about the possibilities, so if I'm completely, horribly wrong, I apologize in advance. I am a software engineer in the real world, and look forward to trying my hand at SL scripting.
I think your idea is cool. Very cool, infact. My understanding is you want to be able to query all content in SL for specific keywords, etc., like a google for stuff in SL? I had a related thought once I learned that SL supported XMLRPC. I was brainstorming an idea about creating a building with scripts that would access an outside, "real world" XMLRPC server, and pull in all kinds of stuff... rss news feeds, being one example. I could program this external servre to be a sort of aggregator of all the stuff I want access to in SL. I could then spend more time in SL and have a scripted virtual terminal, tv, whatever to check up on stuff I like in the real world via XMLRPC.
So, to link my idea with yours, perhaps a central XMLRPC server could be setup somewhere, and people could publish meta data to this server from their scripts, and it'll all be stored in a central database. Then, your queries can be run off of that. So, a person who creates a building in SL with art on a specific topic could publish meta data with those topics to this central server, where it could be queried by others so it could be easily found.
Am I making any sense?

Someone actually responded to this thread... I had given up thinking that it must have gotten lost at the end of peoples' "new post" list. That sounds *very* ambitious, which I can never fault someone for in SL. However, I am speaking more generally about simply linking to web content or otherwise providing things to do and/or read when on property. As I am a terribly bad scripter, I couldn't begin to comment on your idea; I sure hope someone else can. As a side note, has anyone found the equivalent of a "library" in SL? (Not referring to script library, but a reading room with simple clickable notes.

Well, the Infonet approaches this goal in many ways; there's also a few in-world books now (some on notecards, some using tech like that of Cory Doctorow's book). Also, while it is primarily an art gallery, I keep intending to go back to my own little museum - the Field of Can'Ka No Rey, in Neualtenburg - and add more explanatory content regarding Steven King's Dark Tower series. As of now, it's primarily an art/display place I run events at.

The idea becomes even more exciting, and easily implemented, with the forthcoming version 1.7 release. Surprisingly, very few people have made use of the current functionality to open a web site when someone clicks on something. Hopefully with the browser integrated into SL in 1.7, we will see much more of this type of stuff. Face it, notecards absolutely suck - so web page integration is a great step forward.

I concur. Embedded HTML is going to rock.
I think it's going to fundamentally change the way many things are done. Take shopping for example; a vendor shop could just have one wall photo that launches a browser to an html store... something like slboutique. The user can then browse the vendor products on the website, which provides a much better medium to "sell", give expanded details, etc. It may also be a better experience for the shopper as well, though arguably a less "immersive" experience.

That's juicy stuff... I fancy myself a nice amateur web creator and feel like that's the thing I'm best at with all this SL stuff. I've gone through the trouble of creating Dreamweaver templates that have already allowed me to create stuff fast. I can't wait until I can directly display the contents within SL.
Thanks for the tip. There are too danged many things for me to keep my eyes on these days.
