From: someone We've invited about 150 Friends Of O'Reilly, people who're doing interesting work in fields such as web services, data visualization and search, open source programming, computer security, hardware hacking, GPS, and all manner of emerging technologies to share their work-in-progess, show off the latest tech toys and hardware hacks, and tackle challenging problems together. So, Cory Linden has been invited to the Friend's Of O'Reilly shindig, but I'm wondering why. The FOO, or FooCamp, lists the type of people they invite, but there's nothing up in that list that Cory's working on: web servicesSince when has Linden Lab worked with web services? Their XML-RPC gateway has been half-broken for over a year now. data visualization and searchMaybe, but lacking a client API, I can't see how you could classify Second Life in the same category you'd put graphs, charts, or data mapping software. I won't even touch the "search" aspect of that. open source programmingCory says, "Making games is a difficult process and Open Source methods seem ill suited to making large scale games." So, it's obviously not that. computer securityAren't we still using plain-text passwords and plain-text, public listens while transacting real-dollar business? hardware hackingIsn't Linden Lab typically proud of their ability to use off-the-shelf components to run the grid? GPSNope. all manner of emerging technologiesI'd say maybe here, except virtual worlds have already emerged. Streaming technology has too -- and thanks to Podcasting, streaming has probably unemerged a bit. So, while I poke and kid, I am curious why the FooCamp invited Cory. (And, no, I'm not jealous I didn't get invited. I'm more upset and intrigued that they picked Cory over someone, like Andrew, who has actually shown real technical savvy in my time in SL.)

From: Jarod Godel There's this thing called "Internet," you should really use it sometime. Wow, dude. I totally didn't know about the internet. Thanks for telling me about it. I will check it out. Do they sell it at Wal*Mart? It is one thing to read something on the internet. It is another thing to sepculate on why someone was invited to something on a public message board, when it is really none of your damn business why. Thus, "Stalker, Much?". Now, let me check out this internet thing...

From: Eboni Khan It is one thing to read something on the internet. It is another thing to sepculate on why someone was invited to something on a public message board, when it is really none of your damn business why. Thus, "Stalker, Much?". I disagree. First off, if they're posting all that information to a public website, then it's public information. Public information can be anyone's "damn business" is that someone is curious enough to investigate. Second, I speculate because I'm curious what criteria Cory has met. If there's some piece of Second Life that he's working on that's gotten enough buzz in the FooCamp circle to get him invited to a rather exclusive party of (seemingly) forward-thinking technologists, I'm very interested in knowing. If it's none of my "damn business," then all Cory and the rest of the world has to do is ignore me. I'm not going to pretend it's not a little rude, and that I'm not trying to goad people a little to answer my questions, and hopefully reveal a little bit about some killer widget that got Cory on the list. I've very interested in killer widgets in Second Life. But I guess displaying curiosity in the actions of a company and its employees is something that you've never done as a Fortune 1000 executive.

From: Huns Valen "Data Visualization and Search" - this is probably it... SL is one of the most gargantuan data visualization systems on Earth. Maybe, and likely. However, with the exception of "Find" and stuff Xylor (someone else who should have been invited) has done, I don't see how useful it is for that. It could be, don't get me wrong, but right now... I dunno. You're right in regards to it being "one of the most gargantuan data visualization systems on Earth," but it doesn't strike me as being one of the coolest -- when compared against Google Earth, WorldWind, etc. I'm really just hoping Cory or someone will come by and say, "Oh, well, when Tim, Tim O'Reilly, by the way, found out about my working on XYZ, I got invited."

You may recall, Jarod, that Cory was recently inworld to purchase one of those "aluminum foil" hats that Loki Pico was selling. And since that time, Loki has been controlling Cory through the hat's double-seekrit reverse-psycho-transcriptase conduit, thus assuring his (Loki's) ultimate dominion over –––

Well, okay, I cen see why Cory got invited, and despite my earlier contentions, it makes sense after looking at that list. He's VP of Product Development, and that would be exact person O'Reilly, the publishers, would want to talk to about future books on 3D, Virtual World development.

I think virtual world technology is still emerging, so LL's presense at the O'Reilly conference makes sense. There is much potential for SL to move into the "web services" space. Integration of a 2D browser into the SL engine will open all sorts of possibilites. I'm sure I can't even imagine what the most interesting applications will be. Security is something in which many of us here at LL are interested (the SL client password is not sent as clear text). There is much data to be processed/browsed in SL and as developers of the technology we are interested in data visualization/search and how to make it better and easier within the SL user interface. Cory's statement about OS not being well suited for large scale games is correct for games that have high art/content costs and a relatively short lifespan. I once read an article where it was pointed out why OS does not work well for games. As noted at the end, it DOES work well for games with a long lifespan, which is why I think it would work well for SL, and why I'm in the "open the source sooner rather than later" camp here at LL. Please take my word for it: Cory is the correct guy to be going to things like FooCamp. He is smarter than me and much faster at whatever it is he sets his mind to. A sharper razor would be hard to find. Me? I just like to make verbose technical posts to these forums whenever I get the chance.
