I keep having IP troubles, so I'm just posting here to say I'm still around (and so is my hubby) but getting on line has been difficult.

Like right now, I can't get a dsl connection to work. So another day goes by without visiting....

Oh well, we'll see you when the weather dries up (it's usually the rain that screws things up here) ....

Good nite all, Love Ingie

your DSL provider isnt doing anything to fix it ?
You should complain about the service daily till they do fix the problem,if rain is messing it up it must in someway be due to faulty wires and they are responcible for that..dont talk to a service rep get the supervisor on the phone and fill his/her ears everyday till it works..after all your paying for service everyday not just days it doesnt rain...and if there is a crack in the woreing you service even when it does work is in all liklyhood less than what it should be...

just a suggestion

Well, I think the rain problem is on our side of the line, and hubby won't let me risk having them check it out, because if it is on our side, they'll charge us for the visit. We don't want to risk it.

a couple of days ago, I went round and round with them. The yahoo dsl program they make you use is crappy (IMHO) and finally the guy had me remove the program and log on with windowz XP settings. That worked, but would log off after a few min. Then I couldn't log back on, the shortcut created couldn't find what we made....

Well, to make a long story shorter, LOL, I uninstalled everything, removed my devices, restarted and let Windoz XP ask the questions, reinstall the hardware and it all works now :D

Except it's 10:45 and I can't get into SL,

But of course, good news, I got rid of another annoying icky "forced" program on my computer, got it working well with the system, removed those awful "forced" browser add ons, and am much happier over all with how things are.

As long as the skys stay clear, I hope to be around, LOL, and will take a look at my exterior phone box when I can.

See ya tomorrow :) :p
Good nite to you all, Love Ingie

It is a problem with twisted pair that poor installation can really effect them. What is happening to you (my educated guess) is the wire is not properly sealed and moisture is getting in it when it rains, this is possible, does happen, really sucks and is almost always the fault of the service provider.

Were they the ones that installed it at your house? Was any part of the installation a self done installation? If it wasn't then I can't see how it could be your fault. Although I suppose they could blame it on faulty house wireing, but I thought most of the time they installed it all the way into the house to its own jack in the wall. Just be 100% sure to make them come over when it is raining. :D That would be my suggestion at least. If that is not possible then switch to cable if possible, it will at least give you a clean installation. But cable isn't available everywhere I know.

Heres is one thing you can try and it may indeed help you....
at your local hardware store in the electrical department they sell (at largers stores anyways)
a Grey Bar of puddy made for just such issues put it at every place a wire comes in or out of the box and also where it enters the house in a cone shape it resists moisture and protects the wire as it plugs the hole and it is very inexpencive... they use it at the top of Meter hubs to keep water out (i just put in new electric service lastyear and had to buy it )
the bar is about 6 inches long and 2x2 and it was like 4 bucks or something ...
kinda reminded me of playdough but stays plyable and doesnt shrink so is a long term solution

Thanks,

Unfortunately, it's an existing telephone line, and may be our fault (our side of the line) The putty idea sounds great, I'll give it a try today. Thanks so much for all the help everyone!!!

Love Ingie

if you still have problems after the putty, try doing a "line test" while it's raining. get a 50' phone line cord, and run it from the box on the outside of your house (there should be a test jack in it) directly to the DSL modem. if the connection still doesn't work with the jury-rigged line, then the problem is either at the box, or before (i.e. their problem - they have to cover everything up to and including the box -- after that, it's your responsibility). if the problem goes away, then it's definitely inside wiring. if that's the case, then hopefully you have an electrically/electronically savvy friend or family member who can re-do your wiring for only the cost of the wire.

if they do this, then i might suggest going the expensive route and getting a 300' spool of CAT5 wire and use that for the inside wiring. good stuff. otherwise you'll have to hire a local phone/electrical repair person to fix it for you. just make sure they use solid wire and not stranded, as i've had multiple DSL techs tell me the crosstalk between strands can make a tenuous DSL connection die altogether.

if you've got any more questions about wiring, feel free to ask me either here on the forums or in a PM. i don't profess to know everything, but i do know a lot, have been working with computers for nearly 15 years, and have been doing networking for over 5 years :)
