I'm actually amazed that no one here's mentioned it at all. Given that a lot of us are likely pretty far 'up' on technobabble, I'd have thought everyone would've been atop this long before I mentioned it. Yes, Google has finally released their long-fabled Instant Messaging client, "Google Talk". For those of you who I can sense the "Ugh, another client? I already have Gaim/Kopete/Adium/<insert client here>" comment about to pour forth, be silenced for a moment. Google actually encourages you to use alternate clients if you don't want to switch, and even gives you step-by-step instructions on how to set up a small number of clients. You'd only lose voice capability for the trade-off. I'll admit, I was quick to toss in a login for myself to my copy of Gaim -- in fact, about 2 hours before the official initial release, I was on. But yeah, if any of you are into that, have a look.

I thnk it was still an unconfirmed rumor this morning. Or was that yesterday. I remember reading that people were getting errors on talk.google.com. But it works now. And it uses Jabber. Hurray! And if people will buy into the notion that these things should all work together the world will be a better place. And if they don't, the world will be a Google place. http://macbeach.blogspot.com/2005/08/google-talk.html

I'm trying it. I love gmail - it's sooooo clean. Usually the ads on the side (when I notice them) just make me giggle. Plus, I've got 50 invites to gmail if anyone is curious. Those things multiply faster than bunnies.

I cant find it in the documentation, does it support group chat/conference voice? Im not going to get any of my friends to convert without multiple user functions.

My overseas colleague sent me an invite for Google Talk this morning, and I installed it. I'm still very much concerned about Google's data mining practices, so I doubt that Google Talk will become my primary text or voip messaging service.

I've looked for any sign of this and haven't found any. I hope its in the works though. So far so good! The client is quite nice, very googleish. Still very very very beta, though. I assume it'll be amazing soon enough. I can't wait. heatherdawncohen@gmail.com Google Me

Nah no group stuff. I wonder how good the voice is. Might just get skype instead and try that.

Ars Technica had a recent review on it. Their conclusion, it is "chatting like it's 1996" but they note that Google's stated intention toward de-balkanizing the IM space was a Really Good Thing and it will materialize in time as it is based on open protocols.

At least Google is up front about what they're doing. Do you really, truly know what the rest are up to? As per the whole "IM Space" thing, it's true that a lot of work needs to be done. It's sick how I have to run Gaim so I can connect to all these different protocols (AIM/ICQ, MSN, Y!, Google Talk, whatever), because others are so close-minded over what parts of IM Space they want to explore. This said, I can be found on GTalk as x.araiya
