Hi everyone,
Just yesterday my new computer arrived and now I'm finally able to dig into Second Life [my account reads 2007, because when I first joined, my computer couldn't run it]. I've heard the rumors and the stories about how it's a sex-craved world, but I was still curious on what I could possibly find. I jumped into SL yesterday for the first real time as a complete newbie. A lot of people were extremely nice into lending me a hand and showing me where to go. They all suggested I find some sort of employment, and said club jobs were a good place to start.
Now, I looked into the club jobs; strippers, dancers, escorts, etc. etc. Someone also said prostitution is a great way to make money. I bet it is. However, the situation is that I'm taken in real life, I live with my significant other, and I can't wrap my brain around taking a virtual sexual job where not only will my significant other be completely offended, but I would be too.
I'm not good at creation-- I have no idea about these scripts, making textures, etc. It's not my thing. I spent all day yesterday walking around picking out clothes and objects and having a blast. But now I feel so let down because it looks like if I want to earn money, it looks like I'll be doing so half naked and talking with my tongue on someone's ear to get tips and such.
I'm still a newbie at this, so I'm looking for any sort of advice at all. I've been having a blast in Second Life, and I don't want to give up with it.
Thanks so much!

Hi Else.
I have had two hostessing jobs in Second Life, and neither has been at a sex-related club. I've run across a couple of other really good non-sex clubs as well. It's mostly a matter of searching until you find a place you click with, and then applying for or lucking into an opening. You do need to have some SL skills - being able to send out group notices, inviting members into the club group, keeping track of who is in the room and greeting people as they come in, dealing with troublemakers (rare, in my experience), and possibly operating the contest board if your club has one. Pay is usually tips or a percentage of tips. (I think even strip clubs and sex clubs have hostesses who do not get naked or cyber with the guests, but facilitate and oversee club events. I don't know if you'd be comfortable with that, but if you are it does broaden your options.)
So my first suggestion would be to search events for clubs or nightclubs in places and take some time visiting and getting to know a few - keep an eye on how the hosts/hostesses and DJs interact with the crowd.
My second is to search events - education for some basic building classes. Even if you never make anything to sell, they can be extremely helpful for setting up your own place, adjusting prim attachments, and so on. And you will meet many nice people and perhaps find talents you never knew you had.
(One other way to find good, active clubs is to look at the Picks tabs in people's profiles. The club where I work is in there, as is another I frequent. Feel free to IM me - or PM me - if you'd like.)

You DO NOT have to comprimise your morals and values by earning lindens in SL by stripping or prostituting.
You can hostess at nice clubs, you can offer assistance to managers of nice clubs, you can take pictures and sell them, you can create art and sell them, you can learn to build and sell your things. You can have a ton of fun participating in contests at clubs as well. You could model for designers. You can acquire a ton of nice "freebies" by participating in SL hunts or from xStreet. The key thing to remember is its not about having lindens in sl to have fun or to enjoy what SL has to offer.

Hi! I'm an alt created because my main was totally convinced you don't need money to have fun in SL. Everything I own was a freebie, one way or another, and I'm having so much fun my main is jealous.

It looks like the hostesses at the dance clubs have a great time - great way to meet a ton of cool people. Try Frank's - Sweetheart's - Sphynx - Phat's (I think you need to leave the apostrophe out of a couple of those, when doing a Places search) Maybe spend some time there, and watch the hostesses, to see if it is something you would like. Also, great places to mingle and read profiles....might find a job offer on someone's profile.
