Any of you out there have famous ancestors? Years ago I was excited to find out that both of my grandparents were into geneology. The only problem was the most exciting ancestor they uncovered was someone who plucked chickens for King Henrey VIII. Maybe I should develop a rubber chicken avatar in his honor.

How about you folks?

Uhm, I think the most "famous" of my ancestors is a tossup between the man who founded the first school of Latin in Boston, or my grandfather, who painted for WB and was the voice of the roadrunner.

Not really a descendent, but a (probably distant) cousin of John Nance Garner :o

LOL! Well..I think that's quite interesting. My mother's side is descended from the Warburtons of Arley in Cheshire. I live just a few miles down the road from Arley Hall, and know from visits that the family traces its ancestry back to Odard of Dutton -- one of William the Conqueror's Knights, born in France around 1048.

My father's side of the family originally hails from Scotland. On a trip to the U.K. in the 1960's, my parents tried to look up our family tartan. Apparently, we don't have one, but just a faint addtional thread to a larger (but still small) clan's tartan. They were told that the orignaly family was either too poor or too unimportant to have their own tartan. So I proudly proclaim that I'm descended from a poor and unimportant Scottish family!

Belle Starr and Robert E Lee, both on my mother's side, not exactly sure how, but my Aunt does geneology research as a hobby.

No famous ancestors but a funny thing that happened at the geneology library.
This eldery lady while reading the census rolls. Exclaims out out loud "I have found my
great grandmother and she was a rug maker" Joy turned to saddness when it was explained
to her that a hooker did not make rugs.

Holy crap did he ever take a beating at Antietam! I'm astounded that he survived that, even moreso that he was able to continue to fight!

I have no confirmation of this but a famous Chinese pirate is said to be somewhere inside our rather large clan. Whether he is in the clan or not he's not a direct ancestor.

Thats right, our family motto according to grandad, "take a licking and keep on ticking" :D

You remember LT. Dan from Forrest Gump? My family has a similar dubious honor thing going. Somone in our family is wounded in every major war the US has faught since the Civil War.

I've got a couple good ones, if you can believe family folklore.

On my father's side, supposedly my family line traces back to Moses's brother, Aaron. No way to know if it's true, obviously, but what is known for certain is that the name Aaron has been one of three names passed down from generation to generation for as far back as the family history goes. The tradition is that that name is always supposed to be alive in the family at all times. Since my father's name was Aaron, and he is now deceased, it falls on us to give that name to one of our children. Assuming any of us ever get around to having any, that is. (I think I'll leave that honor to my siblings. I'm good at a few things, but I suspect parenting would not be one of them.)

Regardless of whether the biblical Aaron really was my great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, grandfather or not, all I know is it really must have sucked to have been Moses's brother. I feel for the guy. I know what it was like fighting with my own brother while we were growing up. I shudder to think how it would have been had he been capable of summoning plagues and parting oceans.

On my mother's side, the "fame" isn't quite so divine, but it is much more believable. The only link to notoriety I know if in mom's family is some long lost cousin who was a concubine in the castle of King Michael of Romania. Not exactly an ancestor, but still a family member.

So, if family legends are to be believed, I'm the product of divine goat herders and royal harlets. Well, almost.

Research in this area shows that pretty much everyone has a famous ancestor or two (or three, or four, or....).

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/13621717/

In fact, some believe that we are all descendants of one specific person.

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/13621729/

So really, pick a famous person who lived 1000 years ago, and they are your ancestor.

Personally, one of my famous ancestors is Plato.
