For anyone interested, here's a memorial for all lost June 4th 1989 across China, with hope for the future.

Info on China's democracy movement and the events of 1989 available on-site.

All welcome! SLURL here

But but but Wikipedia (Chinese)says it never happened! :(

I also did a search at yahoo.cn with 天安門(Tiananmen), and nothing related to the incident came up. It's an improvement though. Your IP used to get immediately banned from the site just using the keyword a few years ago.

I wonder if YouTube is accessible from within China.

Btw, I think this belongs to the Sandbox forum.

Here's a better film on the incident and the aftermath.

Since the memorial is within SL it seems quite pertinent to General. Utilizing SL to disperse information which has been suppressed is very positive.

Good luck to you. :)

I remember it very well.

I sat and watched in horror, riveted to the images with a good University friend of mine who was here at school from China. His wife and daughter were still in Beijing. He lost several friends in that massacre.

It was one of the turning points in my life. What little optimism and idealistic hopes I had left faded away as I watched those scenes and read the words of the news anchors. The world grew considerably darker, and I considerably more cynical.

To all those who died that day and in the days that followed...I bow my head and and say a prayer. Your courage and sacrifice is not forgotten...no matter what some history books may say.

Yes, the internet banning and policing in China (and growing collusion by western IT corporations) is a strange and sometimes troublesome development.

I was a Mandarin language student in China during the democracy movement of 1989 and was evacuated shortly after Tiananmen massacre. Activists communicated with fax machines, routing around police and government spies. So people can almost always find a way. I suspect the same thing is happening today, although there's not much of a student movement left, based on my last visit to the mainland. But there is much to be hopeful about too.

Thanks for the nice comments! I hope SL continues to expand its universe.

I'd like to think that no-one who saw the television footage would ever forget it, but I know that's not true.

Perhaps it is possible that outlawed political parties and social movements and refugee cultures could find a home on MMORPGs.

That prospect probably doesn't thrill game company owners, nor interest many of the players, but is possible. For example: many contemporary artists in China have made great advances in freedom of speech, partially because the authorities don't have a clue about modern art and partially because it is seen as a commercial venture, and therefore less suspect.
MMORPGs, like Second Life, hold such possibility, simply because they are technically just building-exploring-social games and might offer some protection against the prolific cyber-spying that China engages in. Just a thought. RL invading SL

Best post-Tiananmen documentary, and possibly the most controversial, is the Gate of Heavenly Peace. What happened at Tiananmen, and other cities across China in 1989, is one thing, but the dissolution of the democracy movement's leadership in later years is a whole other story. This film tackes both. Site has key video clips and great context.

Why dredge up the past? Because the 1989 plea for democracy,
minzhu, is still highly relevant. Western media didn't always catch the subtle meanings of minzhu -- -- and the largely positive, pro-national and pro-China sentiment of the reform movement still deserves attention, even in SL, where the accontability of power and governance is still a source of concern.

best, TT

I wish I could forget the things I've seen sometimes. Other times I'm thankful I haven't.

America will never forget!

As long as Chinese slave labor exsit to make my cheap plastic Walmart crap, America will never forget.

As long as GM buys SUV motors from China, America will never forget.

As long as China lends the U.S. money to pay for our war in Iraq, America will never forget.

As long as the U.S. trades manufacturing jobs for low prices, America will never forget.

As long as there is something more interesting on TV, America will never forget.

We will never forget how those students tried to opress their government!

Thank you for illustrating that Flavian.

Yes, I remember, and was chilled. I wish we had seen the last of such events but that is too great a hope for these times. Thank you for placing this memorial in SL.

Wow, thank you so much for the videos. We never learned about this in school, and I did not know the story behind the images. Now I do, thank you! :)

I was barely a teenager when this happened. I have never forgotten about Tiananmen Square, as it so totally burned into my mind as I watched the news. I remember thinking how horrible it all was. I remember thinking how brave that guy was, quite litterally taking a stand.

If only the world had more people with such character.

Not happy about Linden Labs purchase of XStreet (formerly SLX) and OnRez. Will this mean LL will ban resident run online shoping outlets in favor of their own?
