Listening to the local pop station right now while I work at my PC. The station is in a college town, which you'd think would mean they are a little more liberal on some things. And it's FM, not AM.
But as they're playing Sheryl Crow and Kid Rock's "I put your Picture Away", I very clearly heard: Livin' my life in a slow hell Different girl every night at the hotel I aint seen the sun shine in 3 damn days Been fuelin' up on <dead spot here> and whiskey So they can say whiskey, but "cocaine" is bad? Who the HELL made up these rules? Any teenaged kid can go to the movies and see all kinds of gory violence (Saw I or II anyone?), sex and drug use. But music on the radio has to have moral policemen watching out for us? Is that freakin' insane or what?
Wonder how Sheryl and the Kid feel knowing their work was bastardized?

Want some extra fun?
The way they determine if a sex scene is PG-13, R, or NC-17 ratable is based on the number of times the man makes a thrusting motion.

then sadly, they -have- to be used to it... think that radio censorship is really silly... heard the censored version of 'i'm in love with a stripper' the other day, what was it, 'i'm in love with a dancer?' and even then, it sounded more like he was saying, 'i'm in love with a -hooker!-' weird... then there's SKEET SKEET SKEET!!! lol like chappelle said, if the white man don't know what it means, it's okay...

The way they determine if a sex scene is PG-13, R, or NC-17 ratable is based on the number of times the man makes a thrusting motion. it's all a 'counting' system - number of swears, categorized by word... and often, women are -not- allowed to have a 'real' orgasm!! ('when harry met sally's was fake, remember i remember hearing the filmmakers of 'trainspotting' ruing that they had to cut the girl's orgasm during the 'soccer video' sequence for american release... real bummer. she was awful cute. they said something about "women not being allowed to have orgasms in america."

Have you heard that old joke men like to tell?
Q:How do you make a woman have an orgasm?
A: Pfft...who cares?

Hmph. And yet, almost on a daily basis, I get to hear David Gilmour on the radio singing "Money, it's a hit / Don't give me that do goody good bullshit..." Nothing is consistent but inconsistency. P2

I've heard Alice in Chains' Man in the Box on the radio where the first instance of "shit" was removed but the second was still there. I guess it was sung too muddled so it was ok. HP

They have to objectively quantify it somehow.
That was the beauty of the South Park movie. They just went to the MPAA and asked over and over if they could have this or that in the movie. As such they ended up with things like uncle-fucker instead of mother-fucker.

well Cin, hun - the reason is obvious Whiskey, promiscous sex and living your life in hell are all legal activities - In any ammount. Well as long as you dont actually use certain words to refer to the later. Also talking about violence is okay, unless its directed at police. Evidently Violence is better than either cocaine or using certain words for sex. On TV - Nudity , however, is more evil than any of those things - Except the cocaine - Cocaine is just ebil. Even though Kid rock is refering to its use in a negative way. Now , unless its a classic - like Eric Claptons's Cocaine still gets played. But its a classic. There, now, thats not so hard. =p

From: Colette Meiji Now , unless its a classic - like Eric Claptons's Cocaine still gets played. But its a classic. A classic that glorifies the drug no less Some time ago I read a very interesting article about the real aftermath of the Joe McCarthy era. It wasn't anti-communism. It was this prudish, repressive censorship of the American media. The TV ratings council was a stepchild of that mindset, and gave us such incongruities as Mary Tyler Moore sleeping in a separate bed from Dick (one could say she got pregnant without Dick, I suppose). Maybe it's just America. Our social pathology is sickened by a denial of our basic humanity which, ironically, doesn't enhance our dignity so much as it turns us into perverts and wife-beaters. The belief that we cannot celebrate human sexuality without also becoming purveyors of porn and molestors of children is exactly the sort of misguided nonsense on which our "morality" is founded. And now it's been widened to include any references to drugs -- as if it made a whit of difference to a kid who wanted to snort coke or toke a joint.

Yes, and in the 70's on the Mary Tyler Moore show they had to be explict that her character was never married, because the network execs didn't want to give the impression that her character had be divorced from Dick Van Dyke. Happily the show did manage to push some boundaries. She made it after all!

No matter what it is, they shouldn't censor it. If people get so upset over words or scenes, they should change the channel. Watch PBS and listen to disney radio. Damn prudes. If they say it's teaching bad things, that's stupid, especially 'for the children's sake'. Most of the sheltered kids I've known, grew up to be the worst crackheads ever cause they were never taught, just hidden from it all.
