The name rings a bell, sounds like the one based on There. I'm going to have a look...

Cool video. I was all jacked up and ready to sign up for a trial account until I realized these are the platform people that build these systems for other companies (such as There).
Alot of what I saw reminded me of America's Army the online FPS. Kind of curious if Forterra had anything to do with it. Although I'm willing to guess the Army developed AA online themselves. But I do remember hearing plenty about soldiers in the field using AA online for training purposes much like this video suggested. Although if you've ever played AA, you know you don't get to pat down the insurgents for weapons or hold semi-friendly conversations (confrontations?). And OpFor (opposing forces) never gives you the chance, to say the least. ![]() Though I can't say much in the way of AA (in example) being much help to me as far as arms training goes. I shoot fairly well in game, but not even close to how well I shoot on range or on the rare occasion when I've had to draw and fire off range. You just kind of loose something in the perspective playing it on a monitor as opposed to having it actually be behind (inside?) your eyes. Not to mention, the difference between a mouse and button and a pistol/rifle grip and trigger in your hand. Cool link and video nonetheless. I wonder how long before someone else uses this OLIVE technology to pull out the next Second Life (There not counting). |

Must be really cool when you log on and find you're weaponless because the AssHat Server is having a bad day again...
Or you get blown away because you are lagged and can't react... Or are there VWs that don't have those features? _____________________
All very well for people to have a sig that exhorts you to 'be the change' - I wonder if it's ever occurred to them that they might be something that needs changing...?

Must be really cool when you log on and find you're weaponless because the AssHat Server is having a bad day again... Or you get blown away because you are lagged and can't react... Or are there VWs that don't have those features? Heh. This happens in AA all the time. - Gun wont reload (sometimes you can drop it and pick it back up and it'll work, most times not and your stuck without a working weapon for the round. - You start to cook off a grenade before throwing it, lag, and it blows up in your hand and kills you and usually a few buddies on your team standing too close (which leads to ROE negative points and usually a votekick off the server for violating the Rules Of Engagement) - Then there's the texture problem where a member on your squad/team will end up in OpFor clothing and you shoot him to then discover you've killed one of your own. - The worst one has to be the old man bug where you start your 'run' if you're displacing and retreating to another location, and you move like a snail - easy pickings! I wonder how much more reliable OLIVE is? I never tried There, so I don't know if There is more, less or just as unstable as SL can be as far as all that goes. |

This company bought the tech from the company that made "There" Yup, and now they maintain and develop the technology that There uses. I've seen them demo the technology a few times live in real life, and it's very SL like. The avatars are great, when you talk avatars make eye contact with anyone facing them. It also has VOIP integration. A few things to note: You build things in 3DSMax, and script things with C++. You can own and host your own hardware, thus administering your own virtual world. However, they were never straightforward on pricing with me. I scheduled a call with the VP of Sales at one point for a client, but then the client decided to go another way so I cancelled the meeting. One thing is for sure... it will cost you a lot more than a sim. They also have a hosting option like SL, but again I don't know any pricing behind it. _____________________
