So that people don't make a post claiming to be them.

Why?

For me, it's because I like being able to stylize it and have my previous last name--"Torgeson" included; this would otherwise not show up.

You wanted a serious answer??

It's just another way to personalize things.

As to why people want to do it, well you may as well ask why people paint, or sculpt, or write fiction.

They just do.

In Torley's case it makes sense, she went through a last name conversion and it helps with the continuity of understanding what occured and who she is.

But...for the most part I don't get why you sign your name to a post when your name is listed to the side of the post.

It's not the same as why do people paint..good grief.

On my first message forum that I ever posted to, I never gave it thought about my name being posted already and I would sign my posts until someone asked me why I did sign my posts. I had no good answer and decided it really wasn't needed.

Sig lines are a web convention now. It gives you a place to personalize your message, maybe add a witty quote or something that exposes a bit about your personality, your likes/dislikes.

For me, my sig says I'm a geek and proud of it. You wouldn't know that from just reading what I write.

Sincerely,
Aimee Weebler
