Ok, does anyone else think the next X-men movie looks like it's going to be totally cool?

(I thought the second one was kind of a let down)

To me the second one was better than the first one and I am looking forward to the new one as well. Yahoo! even has a poll out about which May movie people are looking forward to and X-Men 3 beat out MI: 3 and the Da Vinci Code by a huge margin.

I get goosebumps just watching the trailor. And since it comes out on my birthday I have an easy gift coming. :D

I spent the first 2 movies explaining the characters to my fiance- who's never laid eyes on any X-Men comics (and wont be touching mine!!) :p

The trailer looks promising, which actually came as a pleasent suprise to me. After all the stories I'd heard about production nightmares, constant rewrites, ludicrous cast member demands, director replacements, I was convinced that X3 was gonna suck, despite the fact that the first two were very good. After seeing the trailer, I'm still not holding my breath, but I'm hopeful.

It may well turn out to be a good movie, but just so I can say I said it, to those expecting it to be like the first two, let go of your expectations, or you might be in for a disappointment. The biggest reason the first two were good was the fact that they were storied and directed by Bryan Singer, a man with phenominal talent. He left X-Men to do Superman Returns though, and the guy they replaced him with is, well, not him.

You see, while Singer has directed some amazing films like The Usual Suspects, and Apt Pupil, the best thing the new guy (Brett Ratner) has done is Red Dragon, which was by far the worst Hanibal Lector movie of all time. Beyond that, the only things he's got to his credit to speak of are Rush Hour 1 & 2 (which while they maybe entertaining when there's nothing else worth renting at Blockbuster that week, aren't exactly the stuff that good character drama is made of), and some music videos.

As for writing, my understanding is that the story Singer had originally written for X3, which was to center around Gene's return as Phoenix (which would have rocked) was axed after he left because poor little Halle Barre wanted it to center around Storm and threatened to walk. So, they rewrote it as a Halle-based - I mean Storm-based movie, which was gonna totally suck (hello, Catwoman 2, anyone?). Then, somehow it morphed from that into something that was supposed to be about the relationship between Xavier and Juggernaut, which actually sounded like it might have some promise. What they've got now seems to be some kind of amalgam of all of that, focusing not so much on ANY real character development, but more on the next phase of the war between mutants an humans.

The two writers of the final version of the film are Simon Kinberg and Zak Penn. Kinberg's notable credits are are XXX State of the Union, which was awful, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith, which I haven't seen, but I heard it was pretty good. Neither of those exactly has the depth that X-Men demands, so I don't have high hopes for Kinberg's half of the writing. Penn, on the other hand, is a little harder to sum up. He did write for X2, which is obviously a huge plus for him, and he wrote Fantastic 4, which was good (although some of the writing could have been a bit better). And of course, we can't forget PCU, which was great. On the other hand, he also wrote Electra and Last Action Hero, both terrible.

So, to summarize, between the two writers, one's pretty bad and the other is hit & miss, the director's track record is questionable at best, and the story seems to be only faint shadow of what it could and should have been. Still, the trailer does look suprisingly good, so maybe I'm just being overly cautious. I gotta say though, if even half the stories I've heard about everthing that's gone wrong for this movie are true, it'll be shear dumb luck if it turns out not to be bad. Here's to hoping and keeping your fingers crossed.

So much for the big set-up at the end of X2.

But I'm still eagerly awaiting - any excuse to see Hugh Jackman ;)

Interestingly, all my comic-book following friends seem to think 3 is going to suck.

<--- doesn't follow comic books, figures it will be a great action flick

Yeah, tell me about it. I was so psyched at the end of X2. Phoenix was one of my favorite characters, and I was really eager to see Singer's take on her. My heart sunk when I heard they had abandoned that story. I hope that Superman movie with the ugly new costume was worth it (but tht's another thread).

The one ray of hope here is that we know Jean's gonna be in X3 from the trailer, so the Phoenix saga may not have been written out entirely. They'll probably touch on it at least a little bit. It would be almost impossible to bring her back otherwise. Probably won't be enough to do it much justice though. Oh well.

Sounds about right. People who are into the X-Men story and characters are probably gonna be disappointed with X3 from what I've heard about it, but as a movie in its own right, without thinking of it specifically as an X-Men movie, it might still be pretty good.

As I said before, I'm hopeful, but I'm not holding high expectations.
