On a serious note, if a 41 year old teacher gave my 10 year old son a wedgie, said teacher would have much more than jail to worry about.

My husband would have to be restrained from killing the man.

Maybe he doesn't belong in jail, but they didn't say whether the student had been injured or not. A friend's son lost a testicle after being given a wedgie in school several years ago. At the very least, the teacher shouldn't be teaching anymore.

I think that's the major point here.

This is a serious lapse in judgement from the teacher, and it looks to me like he got arrested (long after the fact), because the parents wanted *something* done.

Given the huge time lag in between the event and the jailing I think it likely that the parents sought a remedy from the school but that the school was unwilling to punish the teacher, thus the call to the law.

I mean look at the guy, ... he looks like a wrestler!

No one like that should be humiliating children let alone physically abusing them. He should have his license to teach suspended at the very least (and possibly have the word "tool" permanently tatooed on his forehead.)

My eldest sister's a teacher. A student decided that it would be funny to give Sis a wedgie while she was sitting on a lab stool. Sis was understandably startled and fell off the chair, literally cracking C4.... She has experienced residual pain for years since... and the student certainly did not intend to hurt my Sis.

Considering the news report's "wedgie" incident in that context, while I do think that jail may be a bit much, certainly an adult in an authority position like that must be held responsible for his or her actions. There are certain things that one is and is not allowed to do as an authority figure and as a professional. An English teacher in a classroom, for instance, operates under a different set of norms than an athletic coach on a practice field (how many times have you seen or heard of a football coach grabbing a kid's face mask to talk/correct a player, or of a fanny swat of encouragement on the field?).

I would think, as said above, that the time delay could be because other avenues were exhausted - but I could also see in today's litigious society, some lawyer encouraging the family to get the teacher to bring charges as a precursor to a civil suit for monetary damages.

There's really not much information in that article. It would be good to know the circumstances, how it happened...many other questions before I could even really have much of an opinion on this.
