Glitch turns tables on Bush as media listen in on chat about eavesdropping

WASHINGTON - President Bush wanted to speak in private Friday to members of the House Republican Caucus at their retreat on Maryland's Eastern Shore.


But someone forgot to turn off the audio feed to the White House press room several miles away.

"I want to share some thoughts with you before I answer your questions," Bush told the lawmakers, unaware that microphones feeding into the press room were on. "First of all, I expect this conversation we're about to have to stay in the room. I know that's impossible in Washington."

With reporters eavesdropping at the White House, Bush launched into a defense of his National Security Agency eavesdropping program. His talking points were much the same as his public ones.

"I wake up every morning thinking about a future attack, and therefore, a lot of my thinking, and a lot of the decisions I make are based upon the attack that hurt us," Bush said.

NSA devised the program at the president's behest after the 2001 terrorist attacks, Bush said. Without court warrants, the agency wiretaps calls and reviews e-mail ending or originating in the United States involving terror suspects.

"I talked to the people whose job it is to protect the American people, and I said, 'Are we doing everything we can to protect the people?' " Bush said.

Bush said the White House counsel and the Justice Department agreed that the NSA program was legal.

"We had the program analyzed legally, but I recognized that wasn't going to be enough. And so we put constant checks on the program," he said.

The once-united GOP caucus faces internal divisions about immigration, federal spending and the NSA program. After several minutes of unintentionally broadcasting Bush's chat, the White House got wise and cut the audio.

The first thought that leaps to my mind is that Dubya got an unintentional taste of his own evesdropping medicine!

All I can say is.....

I don't see how it's a bad thing actually. He didn't divulge any new shocking information in this "secret" meeting; in fact, it just solidifies his stance on the issue, and proves he doesn't have one stance before a T.V. camera, and another behind closed doors.

Oh, yeah, the words of a horribly evil man:

"I talked to the people whose job it is to protect the American people, and I said, 'Are we doing everything we can to protect the people?'"

Sounds like he's a real jerk, trying to protect America.

My first thought is that his was staged.

I thought of that too but I doubt it. I think W's thoughts on the issue are just that shallow. He's a puppet, not the evil mastermind. Even if it was staged it's still funny as hell.

Yep, looks like we have about 14 inches on the ground where I am. It seems to be mostly over with here and we're not getting the high winds they're getting farther up the coast. It's very cold but beautiful outside
