Actually, they were shot for watching football. There was an incident back in Islam's history where a religious figure was beheaded and his head was subsequently kicked around playfully by his killers. Because of this, some extremists regard football today in unfavorable terms. Go figure. And btw, the Taliban were just as strict. I believe that they had actually banned the playing of football or that they had tried to ban it and the populace had resisted. I don't quite remember.

Actually, they banned it and used the soccer stadium to perform public executions.

Ok, I did a quick research. It looks like the Taliban had a change of mind with respect to football. I read in a couple of places that they initially banned it, but then they relented - however, not without instituting some strict rules for it such as the wearing of long sleeve jerseys and long pants, the stopping of games for prayers, etc. I also found this horrific/ridiculous news tidbit (quote from here):Last year [2000], in an effort to cement Pak-Afghan friendship, Pakistan dispatched a football team to play a friendly against Afghanistan. As the two teams faced each other in the stadium at Kabul with the referee about to blow the opening whistle, bearded security forces entered and announced that the Pakistani footballers were indecently attired. They were wearing normal football shorts, whereas the Afghans were dressed in surreal long shorts which came down well below the knees. Perhaps it was felt that the rippling thighs of the Pakistanis might cause upheavals in the all-male audience. Who knows? The Pakistani players were arrested, their heads were shaved and they were all flogged in public while the stadium audience was forced to chant verses from the Koran.
