Can rock and roll be saved?

God I'm getting so old. I remember the ferment of the late '80s Postmodern Rock (later mainstreamed into 90's Alternative Rock) and thought to myself "wow...looks like rock managed to stave off oblivion for another 20 years or so...the way Punk/New Wave did in the 70s".

little did I know that this was, pretty much, a last gasp for the genre, not a rebirth.

This isn't to say I haven't moved on. I've always liked hip-hop, although hardcore hip-hop (a la Public Enemy) is also difficult to come by these days, not much of a fan of "flow" hip-hop. But my first love will always be fist-shaking rock and roll. And I think it's beyond saving.

Someone show me why I'm wrong.

Thanks for the links...but I'm wondering more on a *cultural level*. Rock will always be around, but it seems to be moving into more of a niche market, as Jazz did when tin pan alley then rock and roll become popular in the early fifties. Will rock ever be the dominant musical paradigm of popular culture again? Or am I at the point in my life where my old man was in the 70s, when he was listening to mood Jazz?

And thanks again for the links. :)

As detailed in this thread, I am in the process of producing a music video for my song, "I'd Die 4 U," which, despite its Princely title, has been called "reminiscent of Radiohead," which I find interesting, since I was coming off a two week Radiohead binge when I wrote and recorded it. It spent several weeks on the charts at Soundclick.com in 2004, reaching #17. Now it's getting airplay on Radio Linden and a number of other SL stations.

After I get my office moved from our spare bedroom out to the garage conversion that I have planned (probably in the next 6 months or so) you can count on more tunes becoming available.

Rock and roll is definitely not beyond saving, as long as there is somewone willing to take guitar in hand.

Rock is about rebellion and, therefore, should never be "the dominant musical paradigm of popular culture"! :D Can't be a popular rebel. Sheesh!

Exactly. The best music of any genre has always been created when that genre was underground, or popular with smaller segments of the population (usually teenagers, I guess). Take ska, for instance. It had a brief surge in mainstream popularity, much to the chagrin of the core rudies that had been listening to it for 20+ years prior. A whole lot of the stuff that came out of that surge pretty much sucks, and everything went back to OK once the 'scene' was underground again. Punk, too. Despite what people think, or what magazines say, punk has never died. It just went underground, back where it came from and has always been best.

Sure, I'd be glad to. I'll shoot you the mp3 of 'ID4U' as soon as I have a chance.

OK so Phoenix? I have to ask....what's up with the name of the song? Why "4 U"? It makes the song sound like it's something from Brittney Spears or something. I'll say I haven't heard it yet, but the name just makes my teeth itch...

Long Live J-Pop!!!!!

Just kidding!!! *dodging tomatoes & bricks* :p

I just miss the days when I could hear the first few guitar cords and know who it was. A lot of this new stuff just sounds "pre-packaged", with a few exceptions of course.

Someone obviously was born after Prince. :)

Hah, not hardly. When Purple Rain came out I was a teenaged metalhead that thought the movie and Prince in general sucked :D

Hmm...here we are 22 years later (!) and I still think that.
