According to recent research, at the rate the icecaps are melting, the earth wll suffer catastrophic events in as little as one century! If we don't get serious about protecting the environmen from greenhouse gasses we won't have a First Life, much less an Second Life! I think that as residents of Second Life we are in a unique position to bring attention to the plight of the planet by showing the world the difference between a Utopian society and the world we are taking advantage of in RL.
I suggest we start a Save First World movement.
I realize that every other thread I start is quickly censored but this topic is really important to mankind! (don't worry, i'm not trying to bring attention to any silly little child abuse issues!)

If this is going to be greenhouse effects and ice caps melting, should this be like, you know...in "Off-Topic?"

I'm sleepy, I'm bored, and I've got this snake-to-a-bird fascination with insanity. Can't help it.

From: bella Ophelia That also looked like a response... I think you LIIIIIIKE me... bella, I'm going to try very hard to play nice. The threads that got locked tonight upset at least one person that I really respect (said person being very fond of pink and green), and I know my posting didn't help prevent that. So I'm going to try, very hard, to play nice. That said: I believe that threads can and have been closed for not following their stated topic. So discussion within this thread should be limited to the melting of the ice caps. Which, although it's not a topic I've followed closely, does not seem to be fictional. I caught a snippet of something recently about polar bears possibly being endangered, even.

It's pretty easy to tell the outcome of this thread before it seriously starts- if it seriously starts.
Tree huggers say we need to stop global warming. Skeptics ask whether or not global warming is directly related to human activity or if the majority of it is from natural causes. I jump in to quip that it's really our fault for trying to clean up the air in a half-assed way because global dimming would have taken care of the problem (though we'd all have lung problems). Tree huggers say don't make light of the issue and tell the skeptics they are greedy, mindless, money-hungry partisans. Skeptics say tree huggers are childish partisan members of the cult of global warming. Tree huggers provide "scientific facts." Skeptics provide "scientific facts." All this was just in the first 5 posts, after that we have 14 pages of posturing and finding new ways to express humorless sarcasm.
Protecting the environment is a noble cause, but I'm not sure how many more bitter name-calling sessions I can stand before I take a plump, juicy poop on the bb server.
Sigh. Nevermind. Let's begin.

Chance,
It is not just 'tree-huggers' who are concerned about the rate of increase of global temperatures. By using that expression you are trying to invalidate those with whom you do not agree. Those numbers are growing, and include many reputable scientists.
I have been sceptical about the global warming issue, but it does seem that the more time goes on, the more evidence there is of an unprecedented rate of increase.
Your theory about 'global dimming' doesn't hold water. Pollution in fact would have the opposite effect from the one you imagine. Heat would still enter our atmosphere, but increased free carbon dioxide would prevent it from leaving. The planet Venus has an opaque atmosphere, but it's a little on the warm side there (average ground temperature 900 degrees Fahrenheit). Indeed, the reason it's so hot may well prove to be the same mechanism that we are now experiencing - positive feedback loops caused by the lowering of the planet's albedo by the reduction of areas of ice, and increased cloud cover caused by the higher rate of evaporation.
I agree with you that it is not right to be crying disaster, but equally, the person who fails to be concerned about something that could well be a danger to all life on the planet, is either very brave or very foolish.
