This is really cool: KIVA From: someone Kiva lets you connect with and loan money to unique small businesses in the developing world. By choosing a business on Kiva.org, you can "sponsor a business" and help the world's working poor make great strides towards economic independence. Throughout the course of the loan (usually 6-12 months), you can receive email journal updates from the business you've sponsored. As loans are repaid, you get your loan money back. -Ghoti

I worked for years with microlending programs in the third world.
It is amazing the things people can do with such a small amount of money.

Thanks Goti, I love these sorts of things. Another good one is Heifer International. Check them out. http://www.heifer.org.za/Edit: Was just looking at the Kiva site. I never realized that Bulgaria was considered a 3rd world country. Just seems like the EU could help them out or something....

That's a truly brilliant idea. Supporting industry is by far the better way to go in bootstrapping developing nations.

From: Adam Zaius That's a truly brilliant idea. Supporting industry is by far the better way to go in bootstrapping developing nations. Most people don't want charity anyway. They just want a little help getting started. Before Heifer International will help people they have to agree that the first thing they do once they are up and running is to “seed” another person in their area. Then that person has to do the same thing, and so on. So that small initial investment is magnified many times over. Much more effective than just handing over piles of cash to corrupt government officials.
