Why were Republican SC Justices standing and clapping last night?

That is very odd behavior. One of the best parts of the SOTU is that the Justices never stand or clap or acknowledge anything the President says.

Technically they are supposed to be non-partisan justices and it is inappropriate for them to do so. Or at least that was the belief.

What changed last night? Just seemed odd to me.

The belief that anything is non-partisan these days is basicly a pipedream, Neehai. On both sides. I hold my own party as guilty as the opposing.

That said, technicly SC justices aren't supposed to be non-partisan, precisely - They can have opinions. What they are not supposed to do is let their opinions dictate how they rule.

What should such fellows as I do crawling between earth and heaven? We are arrant knaves, all; believe none of us.

It might have been a non-formal tradition. I just always thought it was funny that they always sat there like stones.

That said, SC justices are also pretty well known for bucking party lines when they personally disagree with it; one of the upshots of a lifetime job.
