Just a Thought... Who thinks that a Messenger for SL would be a good idea something to talk to your friends outside of SL..(like on a differant server that why when SL is down we can still talk while SL is down)

I think the idea of a samll application that let you speak to people IN second life from the outside would be more valuable.
For those people who are say, traveling and are limited to dial up , etc. Anarchy Online had an application like this called AORC. It was extremely useful. |

I agree, I still wait for the day someone does this. I'd gladly pay for it, and probably use it quite often. Please someone work on something like this! ![]() _____________________

I found a post on Gwyneth Llewelyn's blog which advanced the position that LL should adopt Jabber as the internal IM protocol for SL, which would allow SL IM's to interface with the wider Jabber network (which includes Google Talk and Apple iChat).
As someone who used to work for Jabber Inc., this appeals to me on a variety of levels. With the ability to expose messaging and presence for avatars as Jabber IDs (such as, perhaps, "erbo.evans@grid.secondlife.com" , it would be easy for friends "on the outside" to signal me in world. And the reverse could be true, if I could associate an "outside" JID (like my real one, "erbo@jabber.org" with my avatar; then, someone in world would be able to ask me to join them, if I were presently outside.Plus, the XMPP "stanzas" used to transport messages and presence information can also carry other data. LL could use this capability (with a custom XML namespace, of course) to provide any number of "hooks" into and out of SL. And if you think llHTTPRequest will provide a means of making interesting "hooks," well, look out, Loretta, because XMPP could do even more interesting things. Gwyn touched on a few of them in her blog posting, which is worth your attention. It's all just part of what I call "The Principle of Leverage": If you create leverage and make other people aware of it, they will exploit that leverage to your and their mutual benefit. I'd hope LL knows this, and I think they do; "leverage" in this sense is a key element of SL as I've seen it thusfar. They just need that little extra, to crank the leverage up to 11... |

Its a messenger designed for gamers, pops up an IM screan IN the game you are playing when your talking at someone. Get it. Love it. |

If you reply to the email you get based on offline IMs don't those replies go back into the IM of the original sender?

Terrific Idea

This idea is one that has come up in the past, and I for one have always thought it a good one. I'd love to see this, whether an application designed to interface SL or as a result of SL adopting an open standard for IMs. I would especially love it if one could choose to show oneself as not being online in-world when using this application, so that random IMs won't be started and you wouldn't be asked to come to events in-world. I'd often use this tool, especially when doing interviews; there are many times when I just want to chat and don't want to be in-world for anything else.
However, I also realize this might be difficult to create, through either of the options suggested above, and demand might be very limited. If this would take a lot of effort, I'd much rather see LL work on the in-world interface. I do think moving towards an open standard for IMs is a good one; I'm generally in favor of open standards as long as they don't compromise in-world security. _____________________

With the new HTTPRequest it would be possable to jury rige a way to comunicate with the outside of the world... With a object/script.. Not that it couldnt of been done before but it would of been much more work.
If a few people are intrested in attempting something like this im sure we could do it. We could atleast have a web based interface. A standalone java interface I could do my self as well. **Edit** Even better - a make shift system that connects into jabber. Then you could use almost any jabber client.. though a jabbe server would have to be ran as well somewhere. _____________________
